The French manufacturer explains that under a new legislation 14-year-olds with BSR (Brevet de Securite; Routiere) road safety certificates are authorised to drive 'light motorised quadricycles', which were previously reserved for individuals aged 16 and over. The AM license, formerly Road Safety Certificate (BSR) authorises the holder to drive a moped or a light quadricycle from the age of 14 in France. Strict parameters are set for a vehicle to qualify under this license, which includes things like the maximum power generated by the engine should be 4 Kw (5bhp) and the maximum speed should be limited to 45Km/h. Renault took up this challenge and has made a slower and lighter version of the Twizy 80 and calls it the Twizy 45. It has a 5bhp churning electric motor that, as the name suggests, can reach a top speed of 45Km/h. The 6.1kWh lithium-ion pack is the same one that powers the Twizy's more powerful cousin but lesser performance translates into lower battery drain and that's why the maximum range climbs from 100Km to 120Km. Renault suggests that 14-year-olds can buy the Twizy 45 as an alternative to scooters with levels of safety and comfort superior to those offered by two-wheelers. Safety equipment in the Twizy 45 includes an airbag (standard), double seatbelts, disc brakes, and a protective cell. With time, technology is expanding its reach and new gadgets like smart phones and tabs are increasingly being made available to teenagers. The global car manufacturer, Renault, has recently announced their plans to launch a battery operated electric quardicycle. It has been reported that Renault is planning to target teenagers who are 14-years-old and above for their quadriclcle named Twizy EV. The French carmaker explained that as per the new law, kids who are at least 14 and possess the BSR (Brevet de Securite Routiere) which is a certificate for road safety, will be permitted to drive the lightweight motorized quadricycles. Earlier, the minimum age limit for obtaining a BSR certificate was 16. The BSR Road Safety Certificate has now been renamed and will be called the AM license. It will permit a license holder to drive a lightweight quadricycle or a moped once the person turns 14-year-old in France. The law also sets very stringent restrictions regarding the vehicles that qualify to be driven under this particular license and the maximum power of the engine installed in them. The regulation reduces the maximum power generation of the motor in the vehicle to 5 bhps or 4 kilowatts. This will limit the torque and restrict the speed of the vehicle. The maximum speed that vehicles permitted to be driven by teenagers with the new AM license must be within 27 miles per hour or 45 kilometers per hour. Renault officials recently announced the company’s plan to launch an electric driven automobile with an installed motor which can be driven by teenagers at least 14-years-old. Renault accepted the challenge of these restrictions levied according to the new law to design and come up with a lighter weighing and slower version of its previous quadricycle model Twizy 80. The new version as mentioned has been named after its predecessor and will be called Twizy 45. The electric motor of the new quadricycle will generate 5 bhps of power and would reach a maximum speed of up to 27 miles per hour or as per its name, 45 kilometers an hour. The battery on the car would be the same as its earlier version Twizy 80 which had a more powerful engine. It would be a 6.1kWh lithium-ion battery. The lesser engine power in the new version would extend its battery life and increase its maximum range from over 60 miles (100 kilometers) to almost 75 miles (120 kilometers) with a one-time full battery charge. Renault officials mentioned to the press that teenagers who are at least 14-years-old would now have the option of buying the Twizy 45 instead of mopeds, scooters, motorcycles, and other two-wheelers. The quadricycle would have better safety features and would provide more comfort compared to two-wheelers. Twizy 45 would have pre-installed safety features like a standard airbag, disc brakes, a protective cell, and double seatbelts. The market reaction to this new automobilefrom Renault which can be driven by teenagers at least 14-years-old would be something for the other electric car-makers around the world to watch out for.
