Photo: Automedia ] Tesla Model X Electric car brand Tesla is ramping up its portfolio of electric cars with the new Model X SUV spotted here testing in Northern California. The Model X appears to retain its 'Falcon wing' rear-doors from the original concept car. The SUV also features a sleek, coupe-like design, which takes styling cues from the Model S. It will also feature the oversized touchscreen seen in the current Model S sedan. The Model X is expected to have a 600km electric driving range. Speaking with Drive at the Geneva motor show, Tesla marketing chief Ricardo Reyes said the new model would be priced in line with the Tesla Model S, which currently starts at $95,500 plus on-road costs. "The SUV will be the equivalent price," he said. "It will be the equivalent of a premium SUV just like the Model S is the equivalent of a premium sedan." The new SUV is expected to go on sale in Australia in 2016 ... Named after famed inventor and advocate for AC electricity, Nikola Tesla, the Tesla electric-car company is the brainchild of billionaire inventor Elon Musk. Tesla first made waves in 2008 with the Tesla Roadster, a high-performance two-seater electric car based on the Lotus Elise supercar. Then in 2012 it branched out into something a bit more practical with the Tesla Model S. The Model S with its roomy, high-tech interior, five doors (one is a rear lift hatch) and long range has been a big hit for the company, with more than 50,000 sales worldwide to date. Tesla is continuing to improve the S's various models with better range prediction, more powerful motors, and an "autopilot" mode. Of course, a lot of car buyers are in the market for something a little bigger. So Tesla is now tackling a market segment that is the last thing you think of when the words "fuel efficient" are mentioned: the SUV. Tesla's SUV contender is dubbed the Tesla X, and it should start shipping next year. The company showed off a pre-production version at the Los Angeles Auto Show last year, and the X does have some interesting features. The most striking one, aside from the sleek aerodynamic design, is the doors. The front doors work like normal, but the rear doors are "gull-wing" doors that fold up. You usually see these on supercars like the Mercedes-Benz SLS and the Pagani Huayra. I'm not sure how practical they'll be, but they'll certainly grab attention. Not too much else is known at this point, although the X will probably have the same touch screen control system from the S, along with the higher-end motors and Autopilot feature. So I'll leave you with this video of the X spotted on the road recently in California. What do you think? Would you buy one? Some drivers got a surprise treat last week when they spotted Tesla's next car, the all-electric Model X SUV, while driving along the highway in Palo Alto, California. They managed to snap a quick 20-second video while speeding by the vehicle, but you can get a pretty clear look at the car in action. Though the design looks unfinished, you can clearly see the company's name embossed on the trunk of the car, and the front of the SUV also matches Tesla's signature sleek look. It also looks exactly like the pre-production model we saw at the Los Angeles Auto Show late last year: The Model X will be unveiled later this year, and the first deliveries will also begin around that time, in the third quarter. But, since the company is reportedly running behind schedule, Tesla will fill existing reservations first; anyone who reserves a Model X right now will have to wait until early 2016 for delivery. According to recent reports, the company has started testing the upcoming vehicle on public roads, which clearly indicates that the company is almost ready to launch the vehicle in the market. Now talking about the specifications of the car, the new Model X to be launched by the company is reported to have a center of gravity lower than any other SUV available in the market. The car being powered by electric powertrain is continuously supplied with the torque for smooth lane changing, even when loaded with seven adults. Coming to the power of the car, the car is expected to be rolled out being equipped with Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive. The availability of the second motor in the car helps the car to have all-weather, all-road capabilities i.e. the motor in short helps in increasing the torque and traction in day to day conditions. As per the company’s claim, the new Model X being powered by Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive is capable of accelerating from dash to 60 mph within 5 seconds, eventually making it capable of beating the fastest SUV available in the market. Even though, the company has not revealed the official price of the car, but it is expected to be available with a price tag of $70,000 in the market.
