It doesn’t have to be that way, though. A partnership between Daimler AG and ACADEMY driving schools has launched five pilot programs putting new drivers behind the wheel of electric cars. This program aims to introduce young people to electric mobility and vehicles early in life, impressing upon them that while these are like conventional vehicles in many ways, there are important differences in the way EVs operate. One of the most noticeable differences is the regenerative braking systems that are standard on almost every plug-in car, replacing the need to use the brakes as much and also allowing drivers to recapture some extra driving range during their journeys. This new pilot program will go beyond regenerative braking. Driving instructors will impress upon teenagers the importance of charging regularly, managing range expectations, and being aware that the near-silent drivetrain of EVs means drivers must be extra careful of pedestrians. However, new drivers won’t have to deal with learning to drive a manual transmission, something many German driving schools still teach their students. Five ACADEMY driving schools will get two Daimler EVs each, a Smart Fortwo Electric Drive and a Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric. Once passing the eDriverLicense course, new drivers can also start using Daimler’s car2go carsharing service, though this new eMobility course complements, rather than replaces, the standard driving test. I’d also like to suggest adding more energy-saving driving techniques to the standard driving course while we’re at it. If this driving course sounds a lot more intense than the one you and I took in America, that’s because Germany takes driving a lot more seriously. Besides all of the above, new drivers must attend an 8-hour first aid course, carry a first aid kit in their cars at all times, and they must pass several road tests on the high-speed Autobahn. What really convinced me that German drivers are better training is the video above showing how drivers respond to emergency vehicles trying to reach an accident through traffic. Now they’re going to get better at driving electric vehicles too? Maybe we need to import some more of that German work ethic into our American driving schools…and a few more EVs while we’re at it. Supported by Daimler and independent driving school group ACADEMY, each will be given a Smart Fortwo Electric Drive and Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive plus a fast charging station at their headquarters. Learners will be given their first lessons in an electric vehicle, removing the need to master gear changes early and allowing them to focus on the surrounding road conditions before moving on to a conventionally-powered car. The programme will also offer EV training for existing drivers. All participants will undertake practical and theoretical training, receiving an eDriverLicence which enables those over 18 years old to use Daimler’s car2go car sharing service with a 100-minute free access token. Mercedes-Benz maker Daimler AG is co-launching electric vehicle (EV) driving courses at ACADEMY driving schools in Stuttgart, Germany, the company said. The initiative, sponsored by Daimler and ACADEMY Holding AG, was designed to "prepares novice drivers for a future of electric mobility," the auto maker said. Beginning this month, the five driving schools in the greater Stuttgart area "will be offering learner drivers a simple and timely introduction to today's world of locally emission-free mobility," Daimler said in a statement . Students will begin their instruction in EVs, but will also be taught to drive gas-powered cars with manual transmissions, so that by the end of their training, they'll be qualified to test for Germany's full Class B or BF17 passenger car driving licenses, as well as an eDriverLicense. After passing the eDriverLicense exam, students over the age of 18 qualify for Daimler's car2go, a carsharing service in Europe and North America which rents the automaker's Smart Fortwo city cars by the minute, hour, or day. Students who attend ACADEMY schools in the pilot program will also get 100 free minutes of car2go service after gaining an eDriverLicense. The program is also offering an EV instruction course for drivers who already have licenses but want to add an eDriverLicence. They'll get 100 free minutes of car2go service as well. Intended to "generate enthusiasm for electric mobility, particularly among young people," the pilot program "tackles every aspect of electric mobility, focusing as it does on gaining familiarity and experience, as well as on the correct way to handle and work with alternative drive systems," Daimler said. "The theoretical elements relating to alternative drive systems and mobility concepts will be integrated as a double lesson into the theory training and will cover the principles of alternatively powered vehicles as well as information about mobility services," the automaker said. "Issues such as charging time, range, acceleration characteristics, recuperation and the awareness of the silent electric vehicles for other road users' will be addressed here. Daimler is supplying ten training vehicles for the program—one electric Smart Fortwo and one electric Mercedes-Benz B-Class per participating ACADEMY school, which have also added quick charging stations to their facilities.
