[image] Are you interested in learning how to compost? Experts will be at the sixth annual Earth Day Phoenix Festival to offer tips about which food scraps break down best and what to do with compost. Visitors also can learn how to construct barrel systems to catch rainwater. Tiffany Hilburn, Keep Phoenix Beautiful special-events director, said the festival will appeal to anyone who wants to find an environmental organization to volunteer with, learn about composting or figure out what's eating their garden. "Do you wonder how solar energy would work on your home? Or have questions about that Nissan Leaf electric vehicle? They will be there, too," Hilburn said. Visitors will be able to tour solar exhibit homes built by Arizona State University students. The festival has a new location this year: PHX Renews, a 15-acre site with urban-agriculture and community gardens on the northeastern corner of Central Avenue and Indian School Road. Also new this year: food trucks, including Naturally Sweet, Emerson Fry Bread and Island Loco. Rhythm Is Life, a steel-drum band, will entertain. As an Earth Day Phoenix volunteer, Jason Michael Walker of Laveen helps set up the event site, distribute information and clean up after. He also belongs to the TigerMountain Foundation in south Phoenix, a non-profit that focuses on helping the community grow gardens to beautify the area. He said six community gardens are sprouting in the South Mountain area, where residents are growing collard greens, beets and okra. The foundation will have a booth at the festival. "A lot of people are unaware of what's happening in their community, and a lot people didn't even know there was an event," he said.
