In speaking with Volt manufacturer reps, they say that the Volt engineers thought of that as well. They programmed the vehicle to turn on the engine (while driving - may take several trips if they are short) and use a good portion of the fuel if it detects that it hasn't been fueled in a year. Apparently, even the most conscientious Volt owner will have to go to the gas station and fill up every once in a while.
