Employees say they can't imagine why. 8:25 AM - 9 Jun 2015 ] Police in Novato are investigating an arson fire that happened overnight Monday and so far the motive is unclear. NOVATO, Calif. (KGO) -- Novato police released surveillance video Tuesday night that shows the man who allegedly torched four Chevy Volts in a car lot Monday night. The video shows the man picking up something that looks like a piece of cloth and then moments later the person lights a fire and appears to throw it under a vehicle. Minutes later, the cars are fully engulfed. Police have not made any arrests, but could help them identify a suspect. The arson fire occurred overnight Monday and so far the motive is unclear. Neighbors aren't used to this sort of commotion at 11:30 p.m. Monday. "It's strange, you know. I didn't expect it from our town," said neighbor Angelita Tumbokon. Neither did the management of Novato Chevrolet when they arrived to find four brand new Chevy Volts at the edge of their lot set ablaze. "It was a pretty devastating loss all around," said Peter Chin. The Volts are worth about $40,000 each. Some were so badly burned they may be a total loss. "We do believe that it's suspicious and everything leans toward arson," said Novato police Capt. Jamie Knox. Police are working with the fire department to find out if chemicals were used to accelerate the fire. They believe it started in the car they took into evidence, and then spread to the three. "It could be a number of reasons, it could be a disgruntled employee, a disgruntled customer," Knox said. "It's just surprising that somebody would be that upset about something," Chin said. "We don't really have that many disgruntled people coming through. It's quiet most of the time." Police are carefully reviewing the footage the dealership turned over, especially since arson suspects often stay to watch the fires they set. "They will sometimes especially watch as the fire burns and as rescue, emergency crews arrive to put the fire out,"Knox said. With the cars done smoldering, a new problem emerged, the Volts are plug-in hybrids with huge batteries that were partially submerged in water as the fire was being extinguished. Technicians had to carefully dry them out to avoid staring another fire while towing the cars away. Sgt. Sasha D’Amico says officers found several vehicles on fire when they responded to a call Wednesday night about a brush fire in Novato about 30 miles north of San Francisco. At least two 2015 Chevrolet Volts were set on fire, whose flames spread to other cars on the lot. The retail price for a Chevy Volt is around $34,000. The investigation is ongoing as to who might have started this fire, and why. (CBS) ] NOVATO (CBS SF) — Several cars went up in flames at a Chevy dealership in Novato Monday night, leading police to believe it’s the work of an arsonist who was caught on surveillance footage. Carrying a flashlight in his right hand, and what looks like an accelerant in his left, the man in the video appears to know exactly where he’s going and what he’s wants. He picks up something white before he walks back toward the row of Chevrolet Volts. It only takes about twenty seconds for the first car to go up in flames. “The rag, or whatever that he had caught on fire very rapidly; it wasn’t just you know somebody just trying to put newspaper on fire type of thing. You can see him put something underneath the vehicle. You can see a big flame underneath the vehicle then you can see the car catching on fire,” Novato Chevrolet Owner Steve Song said. Song is now looking at more than $100,000 in damages. “It’s pretty brutal for somebody to light a car on fire. because it’s a waste,” Chevrolet Parts Manager Peter Chin said. Four cars were burned. Song says the arsonist took off on a bike. “Hopefully it’s an isolated incident, and hopefully it’s something that we can stop and we catch the guy that did it.” The criminal investigation is ongoing and police are asking the public for help. Stephanie Chuang reports. (Published Tuesday, Jun 9, 2015) Arson investigators in Novato were on scene Tuesday morning at a car dealership where at least two new Chevy Volts in the lot were torched, following dozens of arsons last year and the year before. Police said officers and firefighters were called out to Novato Chevrolet on Redwood Boulevard at 11:36 p.m. on a report of a vegetation fire. A police officer, however, found “several vehicles” in flames in the parking lot nearby on Redwood Drive, Sgt. Sasha D’Amico said. New Rule Bans Pay-First Traffic Ticket Policy "I was shocked because nothing usually happens around here, not that kind of damage, not that kind of crime," parts manager Peter Chin said. An NBC Bay Area reporter spotted two cars that appeared to have been set on fire, and two adjacent cars that were damaged by the flames in a lot situation in back of the main part of the dealership. All the cars were 2015 Chevy Volts. The dealership has video surveillance and office manager Victoria Broderick said she hopes there will be evidence on there. She said an unidentified man was spotted on some of the producer. Kite Events Make Summer Comeback in Bay Area Investigators say they believe the fire was intentionally said, police said, and the investigation is ongoing. Police Capt. Jamie Knox said the circumstances are "very unusual" and that police don't believe there is a serial arsonist running around. At this stage, he said, it doesn't look like the handiwork of a disgrunted employee. As far as Chin sees it, it's a pointless crime. "What a waste," he said. "If you're going to take a car, take it. But don't burn it. It doesn't make sense, unless you're mad at something, then come in and let's fix it."
