A group of travelers who visited Iceland with an electric car are
encouraging Icelandic authorities to set up charging points around the Route
1 ring road in order to encourage more electric car use.

As it stands today, traveling around Iceland in even the most powerful
electric vehicles requires extensive planning.

Three men from Austria borrowed a car from Tesla Scandinavia in order to
travel in Iceland and test the car under challenging conditions. They took
the Norröna ferry from Denmark and arrived in Seyðisfjörður, East Iceland.
They then drove south but needed to rely on local workshops to keep the car
charged.

“It is possible, but needs preparation and you need to know the places it is
possible to charge the car. Now the only public charging point is in
Selfoss. Between the ferry and Selfoss there need to be real charging points
otherwise there is a danger of breaking down,” says Timo Hermeler,
journalist.

The car the three Austrians used is a nearly-700 horsepower electric vehicle
which can travel up to 350 km on a full charge.

It is already also possible to charge electric cars in Egilsstaðir, RÚV
reports, but the Orkusalan charging point is not a fast charger. This makes
it suitable for locals and travelers in a real bind, but not good for those
without several hours to spare.

Stefán Sigurðsson, electric car owner and Tesla representative in East
Iceland, says: “It’s actually no problem to have an electric car and charge
it at home, but when you start traveling between places there can be
problems and that’s something we must solve together. As an Icelander, I
find this unacceptable. We should use our clean energy and if not here in
Iceland, then where? We should just spread these charge points out at
150-200 km intervals and really get behind this.”
