CHESHIRE — A collection of electric vehicles and hybrid cars will be on
display at today’s Strawberry Festival.

The town’s Energy Commission and the Greater New Haven Clean Cities
Coalition partnered to show alternatives to gasoline cars. Coalition
coordinator Lee Grannis said it’s a good opportunity to educate people on
electric vehicles.

“We don’t like to push things on people that don’t make economic sense,” he
said.

The display will include a Tesla, a Ford E Focus, a Volkswagon Golf and
other models solely or partially powered by alternative fuels. The cars will
be on display near the town green and historical society from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m. The Strawberry Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m..

The Clean Cities Coalition is part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s
efforts to reduce petroleum consumption, Grannis said. Grannis recently ran
an informational booth on electric vehicles and alternative fuels at a
Milford festival.

“We get people who know all about them and people who get the fuels mixed
up,” he said.

Grannis said car manufacturers could do a better job of educating consumers
about electric and hybrid vehicles.

Tim White, a former town councilor and an Energy Commission member, said he
hopes people will be able to get a better look at a range of electric
vehicles.

“The goal from my perspective is to increase public awareness,” White said.

He asked dealerships such as Richard Chevrolet and Executive Honda in
Wallingford to bring cars to the show. White also contacted electric vehicle
owners such as Stephen Calcagni, who owns a Tesla S.

White owns a 2006 Honda Civic hybrid, which has an electric battery charged
by the motor. He gets 40 to 45 miles per gallon.

“It was definitely a wise investment for me,” he said.

Steve Calcagni bought his Tesla S a month ago.

“I hope it inspires people to go electric,” he said.

Calcagni hasn’t had any problems with charging. He powers his Tesla every
few days or before longer trips.

“It’s a pretty amazing car,” he said.
