Tesla Motors announces Model 3 to be launched in Sedan and Crossover
variants, expected to debut in 2017

Tesla ... made an important announcement on the details of its upcoming
Model 3. Reports claim that the entry-level electric vehicle (EV) will be
available in sedan and crossover variants.

Speaking to reporters earlier today at the EIA Energy Conference in
Washington DC, Tesla's Chief Technical Officer Jeffrey B. Straubel confirmed
that the Model 3 will be available in two trims— a first for Tesla cars. So
far, the luxury EV maker had only offered Model S sedans. However, Tesla's
visionary CEO Elon Musk has reaffirmed numerous times that the Model X will
also be available in a gull-winged SUV crossover.

At the conference, Mr. Straubel also hinted that Tesla might be producing a
variety of makes in the future. Consumers will have the option of choosing
either a convertible Model S, or an estate version of the Model 3. Moreover,
Mr. Straubel also said that the company is working on mass production of its
electric batteries to drive down costs, which will eventually lead to
cheaper EVs.

Elaborating on the company’s battery business, Mr. Straubel said that the
lithium-ion batteries “will become the predominant and primary fuel for
light vehicles,” and soon replace the traditional fossil fuel combustion
engines.

The latest announcements by Tesla are likely to become reality due to a
change in its business strategy. The company is aiming to attract more
buyers for the Tesla brand, especially the Model 3 version. It seems as if
the company is riding hopes on the back of its $35,000 EV to fulfill its
pledge of selling 500,000 Tesla cars by 2025. The entry level Model 3, which
is expected to debut in 2017, will be able to cover nearly 200 miles in a
single charge.

The announcement came after the company's increased investment trajectory by
clearing the way to secure $15 million tax credit in the state of
California, increasing its real estate profile by leasing the Solyndra
Building, a 500,000 square-feet facility, near its Fremont factory as well
as a $500 million credit borrowed from leading banks to increase its cash
reserves ahead of the Model X launch.

Tesla Model 3 project will include a sedan and a crossover vehicle

Tesla‘s new Model 3 electric vehicle project will result in a sedan and a
crossover vehicle, the Wall Street Journal reported this week.

The US company is also planning cars beyond the Model 3 lineup, and expects
the costs for batteries and technology to fall in the next few years,
meaning lower-priced electric cars and higher demand.

Tesla Model 3 project
The smaller Model 3 is the third generation of Tesla cars. It follows the
Roadster, which was the company’s first electric sports car, and two other
vehicles built on the same architecture: the Model S from 2012 and the Model
X. The Model X should be available later this year.

Prices for the Model 3 are said to start at just $35,000, half the starting
price of Tesla’s first mass market car, the Model S sedan. The Model 3 will
apparently have a range of around 200 miles on a full charge.

The company hopes the Model 3 project will push sales towards half a million
by the end of the decade, says the Wall Street Journal, citing Tesla’s CTO,
JB Straubel, speaking at the EIA Energy Conference.

It remains to be seen exactly when the Model 3 cards are available, but it’s
never been a more exciting time for anyone interested in electric vehicles.

Some more information has been revealed regarding Tesla’s latest automotive
offering.

Elon Musk confirmed that the Tesla Model III will be able to cover at least
250 miles on a single charge, marking an improvement on the previously
stated figure of 200 miles.

The compact sedan also fares well against the companies more expensive
vehicles. The Model S can travel for 253 miles on a single charge, while the
Roadster achieves 245 miles, but both cars will cost significantly more than
the Model III, which will cost just $35,000 (£22,380) when it launches next
year.

Currently, Tesla’s other models cost in excess of £50,000, but the company
has been able to offer a lower priced car due to improvements in battery
technology and improved charging infrastructure. In particular, Elon Musk
has been keen to stress that charging stations are needed not only in
residential areas, but also near places of work and popular travel
destinations.

The lower price is expected to be a huge selling point for Tesla,
particularly as price has long been the main barrier to mass adoption of
electric vehicles. The Model III will also be cheaper than competitors like
the Chevrolet Bolt, which has a price tag of $38,000.

Before the Model III goes on sale, Tesla will able to determine the chances
of an electric vehicle achieving mainstream success with the launch of its
Model X automobile. The Model X will begin shipping in three to four months’
time and provides buyers with 230 miles on a single charge and costs
$80,000.

... Elon Musk and his company believe that the process of extracting energy
from hydrogen is overly expensive.
