Tesla Unveils Dual Motor and Autopilot

Autopilot.

Beginning last October, every Tesla Model S has come from the factory with
the hardware needed to operate the Tesla Autopilot feature installed. The
system consists of a forward looking camera and 12 ultrasonic sensors that
“see” everything around the perimeter of the car out to a distance of 16
feet.

Utilizing that hardware, the company can program the car to perform several
self-driving functions. In fact, it will enable some of them soon for a
group of “early access” Tesla owners who have agreed to be beta testers for
the company.

The Tesla Autopilot system is intended to assist the driver, not replace the
driver the way the Google car does. It can initiate braking to avoid a
collision. It can warn the driver of other cars, motorcycles, bicyclists or
pedestrians that might be in harm’s way. These features are included in the
price of all cars built since last October.

For an additional $2,500, the owner can add the Autopilot package, which
includes the lane departure and adaptive cruise control features. After the
beta testing is complete, Tesla will activate the lane keeping and adaptive
cruise control features via a wireless update.

So far, all those functions are available from other manufacturers as well.
What the Tesla Autopilot system can do that others cannot is pass other
traffic on the road. For instance, while driving on the highway, instead of
just adjusting the speed of the car to that of the vehicle immediately
ahead, it can spot an opening in traffic, change lanes, and accelerate back
to the driver’s desired speed.

That feature will not be enabled until certain regulatory concerns are dealt
with. Some states are concerned that autonomous passing will mean the driver
will not be actively engaged in the operation of the vehicle. Tesla says it
may be a year or more before that feature becomes available.

To satisfy regulators, the self-passing feature will require the driver to
initiate the passing maneuver by using the turn signal control. That way,
the driver is making the decision that it is safe to pass and not the car.
That’s an important distinction in a country where litigation is practically
a national pastime.

Looking ahead, the Autopilot system will be capable of some amazing things.
It will be able to park your car in the garage for you at night. In the
morning, it will drive itself to your front door. When you get in, the
interior temperature will be just the way you like it and the radio will be
tuned to your favorite station. If you are at your club in the evening, your
Tesla will park itself (on private property) and wait patiently until you
summon it via your smart phone.

If it could plug itself in, that would be a real benefit and Tesla is
already working on that. It intends to be selling “millions” of cars every
year soon. Self charging would appeal strongly to prospective Tesla buyers
in the future. This company seems to always think three moves ahead.
Competing with Tesla is going to be a real challenge for other electric car
makers.
