AUSTRALIA’S first “electric highway” will be unveiled in WA on Monday.

RAC executive general manager Pat Walker said it would give owners of WA’s
130 electric cars places to recharge between Perth and the South-West.

Charging stations in Perth, Mandurah, Bunbury, Margaret River and Augusta
will be unveiled, with outlets planned for Dunsborough, Nannup, Bridgetown,
Donnybrook and Harvey in the next few months. A Fremantle charging station
will also be installed by the end of the year.

“We see the RAC Electric Highway as a positive and real contribution toward
the growth of this new form of vehicle technology, namely electric
vehicles,” Mr Walker said.

“It will provide the infrastructure required to help eliminate the issues
currently facing owners of electric vehicles, including ‘range anxiety’, and
for the first time, it will also provide the opportunity for electric
vehicles to now visit the state’s South-West.”

Australian Electric Highway goes live

Five fast charging stations are now live on Australia’s first ‘Electric
Highway’, which will soon enable electric vehicle owners to drive the
192-mile route from Perth and Augusta.

Once complete, the network will include 11 publically accessible fast
charging stations, purchased and installed by the RAC and maintained by
local governments. Charging is free of charge until the end of the year.

The first five are located in Perth, Mandurah, Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret
River and Augusta, with the remainder to be installed within months in
Dunsborough, Nannup, Bridgetown, Donnybrook and Harvey, as well as
Freemantle before the end of the year.

RAC executive general manager, Pat Walker, said: “RAC was formed in 1905
when motor vehicles were very rare in Western Australia. Today we see the
RAC Electric Highway as a positive and real contribution toward the growth
of this new form of vehicle technology, namely electric vehicles.

“It will provide the infrastructure required to help eliminate the issues
currently facing owners of electric vehicles, including ‘range anxiety’, and
for the first time, it will also provide the opportunity for electric
vehicles to now visit the State’s South West.

“The RAC Electric Highway will also benefit the South West region by
attracting electric vehicle drivers to destinations along the route, helping
to support the region’s tourism industry.”

An electric car tour of Tasmania has stalled in Hobart due to a lack of
charging options, as the Tasmanian Opposition spruiks its policy of
government support for the technology.

Motoring journalist Matt Brogan wanted to tour Tasmania in his $108,000
Californian-built electric Tesla sports car.

"We actually got all the way down here from Devonport yesterday on a single
charge, which is something that was just unheard of even three or four years
ago," he said.

But Brogan's tour hit a snag when he discovered he could not repower the car
at a Hobart charging station because it was incompatible with his vehicle's
charging device.

He said the lack of charging facilities in Tasmania could become a problem
once electric vehicles became more widespread.

"Not everyone's driving an electric car but as they do start to become more
popular and cheaper, which is something that will happen over the next 18
months to two years, we're going to start finding ourselves a little bit
short on charging stations," he said.

Brogan said there was an increasing number of electric vehicle charging
stations in Sydney and Melbourne and, to a lesser extent, in Brisbane and
Perth ...
