But that still leaves open the question of fusing to protect against exactly this sort of thing.

I too hope that a fuse or a DC/DC converter power supply has blown
and the heart of the controller is still operational,
but it depends on how it was designed...

Now I wonder... what kind of controller does he have that needs 12v?
