NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — New Orleans police didn’t need a 911 call to know
something was wrong Thursday afternoon on Basin Street.

“We heard gunfire in the 200 block of Basin Street. Myself and other
officers went out to try to investigate the incident,” Lt. Keith Joseph told
reporters from the NOPD’s First District Station.

The district station is just a few blocks away from the scene on Basin
Street where someone opened fire on a black, four-door car as it made the
turn from Bienville Street. According to police, the people in the car and
the shooter on the sidewalk were in a gunfight.

The battle was caught on a security camera at the New Orleans Electric Cars
business where many of the spend shell casings were found. Some of the
business’ electric cars were also damaged by bullets.

The location is just outside the French Quarter but still close enough to
run tourism-related businesses. One worker at the car rental business was
in front of the store less than 30 seconds before the bullets began to fly.

NOPD investigates gun battle near Quarter WWL

NEW ORLEANS -- A dauntless shootout was caught on security cameras on the
edge of the French Quarter and now New Orleans Police are investigating. The
gunfire erupted near the intersection of Bienville and Basin streets and
detectives are searching for suspects.

"They almost killed us in the shop today," said Sal Palmisano with New
Orleans Electric Cars.

An RTA bus passes by on surveillance video and then within seconds a volley
of gunfire between a black car seen pulling away and a young man.

Dozens of shots fired in rolling gun battle on outskirts of Quarter

Palmisano who owns a nearby business heard dozens of shots.

"They shot 5 feet away from the door," said Palmisano.

Security cameras capture a gunman running along the sidewalk, exchanging
fire with passengers riding in the four-door car which would later be found
deserted a few blocks away.

"The vehicle went towards Canal Street. We were able to recover that vehicle
in the 100 block of North Roman Street. The vehicle is being processed by
our crime lab," said NOPD First District Lt. Keith Joseph.

Police confirm the 200 block of North Roman Street was one of three crime
scenes officers responded to on Thursday afternoon connected to the shoot
out. Police say multiple shell casings were found at the location.

and a passing car on a busy street around 2 p.m. Thursday. WWL

Neighbors say the intersection near the old Iberville housing development
continues to attract drug activity and other crime. Back in March, police
got a call about a red car riddled with bullets inside they would find a
body. Investigators say the murder was sparked by a gun fight near North
Claiborne and Elysian Fields avenues.

Lt. Joseph says it is too early to tell if there is any connection between
the March incident and this recent shooting.

"We are not going to tolerate anything like this occurring. We are going to
try and bring these subjects to justice as quickly as possible," said Lt.
Joseph during a news conference.

"It was very brazen. Broad daylight. You just come out, it's crazy," said
Gregg Glasper.

The New Orleans East resident got a frantic call at work from his wife. He
said her car was surrounded by crime tape, blocked in while police processed
the crime scene around the family's Yukon.

WWL-TV found the couple waiting patiently across the street in the scorching
heat. But they're grateful not to have been caught in the cross fire.

"She said more delay of time, she could have been in that situation, you
know," said Glasper.
