Volkswagen is conducting research into an electric car that can connect
itself to the charging port automatically - the company is calling it
e-smartConnect, and this demonstration shows the system in use with a VW
e-Golf.

A camera determines the accurate location of the port and the KUKA LBR iiwa
robot arm comes in with the charger.

Volkswagen is making a robot for putting the thick rubber wires at charging
stations for electric vehicles (EV). The robot is called the KUKA LBR iiwa,
has a big arm with seven joints, and is built for one particular work.

How it works you ask. Worry not. The EV driver has to park his car within a
defined border so that the charging port aligns in an area of 20 x 20cms.
Then, a camera determines the accurate location of the port and the KUKA LBR
iiwa robot arm comes in with the charger.

The whole point of this idea is so that charging spots for EV will never be
occupied pointlessly. The cars are supposed to park by themselves and the
robot will disconnect the cable after the charge is done, the car can then
drive away.
