Australia, where the Labor Party is pledging to attempt 50% electricity from
renewables by 2030, also recently got Tesla stores. Miss Phryne Fisher would
surely be driving a Tesla Model S P90DL to ensure being first at the crime
scene she is investigating in Melbourne, if she was in service today
instead of in 1928. However, the S has a new contender — it’s first,
actually. Orders are now open in Australia for the Tesla Model X.

Australia has more than a few travelers ardently anticipating a new SUV from
the esteemed US electric vehicle innovator. Australia expects the Model X to
show up by the latter part of 2016 for orders that take place now. Any
Australian driver who desires to secure the 7-seat, all-electric Model X can
do so @ Tesla Motors.

For ease of access, each Model X comes with functional falcon-wing rear
doors. Looking like they are set to soar, the wings fold up and out of the
way to allow easy access to second- and third-row seats. Soccer moms,
movers, and plenty of others will be happy.

With all-wheel drive standard, powered by two independent and digitally
controlled electric motors, Tesla Model X makes it possible to take the
family on a road trip in the Aussie wilds.

RenewEconomy reports that the price for the Tesla SUV is not set. However,
they suggest it is to be similar to the BMW X5, which starts at $A84,200.
The post quotes Elon Musk at Tesla’s annual meeting in June, where he
suggested that a few unforeseen pluses are in the works:

“We want to make sure, obviously, that some of the key features of the Model
X, particularly the falcon-wing door, and the way that the second row seats
are done, and a few other things that people aren’t aware of, are done just
right,” Musk said. “Getting those final nuances right for the Model X is
what we’re focused on right now.”

Heath Walker, Tesla’s Australian spokesperson, also mentioned bridging the
gender gap (supposedly associated with the Model S), something Elon has
commented on before. “We’ve been heavily skewed towards the male
demographic, and I think that’s mainly due to probably [the media] more than
anything,” Walker said. It may also be an issue for electric vehicles, in
general. Of the initial 741 responses to CleanTechnica‘s EV owner & lessee
survey, 684 (93.3%) were male. Only 21% have a Tesla Model S.

For all Tesla followers, there have been many sightings of lightly
camouflaged Model X SUVs as Tesla tests the electric vehicle’s muscles in
California (see these and these and these). The Model S has nearly
invincible safety (one reason I believe Phryne Fisher would own a Model S).
Gas2 reports, “Tesla’s Model S sedan aced the NHTSA’s crash safety tests
with a perfect, 5-star score in every category. The results prompted Tesla
Motors’ PR department to start hyping the car as ‘the safest car ever
tested‘.” The score was actually above 5, and the highest ever achieved. I
think we can expect similar from the X.

So, this kindred spirit to the Model S will surely feel safe for the mom
wanting to take on that long trip to another soccer tournament with a
carload of players.
