(WVEC) -- A worker died working near the new electric car charging station in Norfolk. Emergency personnel responded to Janaf Shopping Center around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday to check on a contractor at the station installed by Tesla Motors. The Norfolk Supercharger station has six stalls open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It's grand opening is Wednesday, August 19. Tesla says drivers will be able to travel toward Virginia Beach and allow interstate travel for owners heading to North Carolina's Outer Banks. Tesla is building a network of recharging stations nationwide. Tesla owners can use the stations at no cost. Norfolk police have closed part of the Janaf parking lot in the 5900 block of E. Virginia Beach Boulevard for the investigation. Dominion Virginia Power spokeswoman Bonita Billingsley Harris told 13News Now the victim was a private contractor working on equipment. She stressed Dominion personnel are working with city personnel to make the area safe.
