At the Port of Los Angeles, National Retail Systems is turning from the fuel
pump to the electric plug, putting a battery-powered drayage truck on the
road for customer IKEA.

“We’re going to start by taking containers from the port to our facility in
L.A., about 12 miles away, and we’ll take empties back to the port,” said
Chris Saville, marketing director for New Jersey-based NRS. “Eventually,
we’ll be hauling containers from our yard to their stores.”

The electric truck is part of a test that could lead to expanded use of such
vehicles by NRS for its shipper customer. The truck will have a 100-mile
range.

The NRS truck will be among the cleanest vehicles at a port known for
pioneering clean truck technology (in addition to clean diesel trucks,
natural gas trucks operate regularly in the harbor, and some trucking firms
are testing other technologies). The new Navistar Class 8 tractor will
feature a battery-powered “ElecTruck” powerplant designed and installed by
TransPower, a Southern California-based company. After reviewing other
fuels, IKEA and NRS decided the electric option “was best,” Saville said ...

The electric truck itself is emissions-free, but even accounting for any
greenhouse gases produced by power plants in the generation of electricity,
the battery-operated vehicle could reduce GHG output in typical drayage
drive cycles by 67 to 68 percent,” according to TransPower. That’s a ton of
GHG saved every 1,000 miles, compared with a diesel truck.

The NRS ElecTruck is one element of an aggressive sustainability campaign at
Swedish-based IKEA, which as the 11th-largest U.S. importer of containerized
goods brought 132,700 twenty-foot equivalent containers to the U.S. last
year. By August 2016, IKEA hopes to reduce carbon emissions from
transportation by 20 percent compared to fiscal year 2011.

In 2014, IKEA reduced transport carbon emissions 12.8 percent from 2011
levels, compared with 10.8 percent in 2013 and 7.3 percent in 2012, the
company said in its sustainability report ...

At a higher level, the retailer is creating new distribution and supplier
networks to more efficiently deliver goods to its distribution centers and
stores and to customers. That means upgrading technology to ensure
consistently efficient transportation services, including home delivery to
customers, the company said. IKEA is also fitting more goods into
containers.

Electric trucks ... per-mile per gallon equivalent cost ... can be quite
low, the trucks sell at a premium, and there are other costs involved in
their operation, including charging stations, Saville said.

Nevertheless, several manufacturers still hope to build electric truck sales
in the U.S., especially for local or regional distribution. Kansas City,
Mo.-based Smith Electric Vehicles restarted production of its Smith Newton
electric truck early this year, and launched a joint venture in May with
China’s FDG Electric Vehicles to build light-duty battery-powered trucks in
the U.S.

In Southern California, IKEA wanted NRS to plug its dedicated drayage
operation into the electric grid, Saville said. “They realize this may cost
a little bit more, but just looking at the green side of things, it’s the
best way to go,” he said.
