Experts say these cars are easily tailored to your personal use ] PANAMA CITY- The Alternative Energy Technology Program at Gulf Coast State College started in 2009. Since then, students work hands-on inside the garage on cars, such as a 1992 Miata. Students have converted it from gas to electric four times. "It's totally different than driving an internal combustion engine," Antonio Adessi, a Professor of Architecture and Engineering, said. "At 350 horsepower, this one is lighter and way faster than the original one." There's even a controller in front of the hood that can exceed 600 horsepower, but Adessi says not so fast! "We're an academic institution," he said. "We do research. We want to break parts and see where the problems are and do problem solving." Students have to design electrical systems, mounting brackets, and the new drive shaft for the provided car. "We just don't want our students to be just book smart, we also want them to be shop smart." Adessi explained. Meanwhile, Gulf Power donated a solar canopy, which charges the electric cars on campus. While the college commonly uses this for their vehicles, they're not the only ones coming through. "It produces enough electricity from the sun to charge at least six vehicles a day," Dr. Stephen Dunnivant, Dean of the Advanced Technology Center, said. Dr. Dunnivant says it costs less than a dollar a day. "At peak, it'll produce up to 11,000 Watts or 11 Kilowatts and that's what is used to charge the vehicles," he said. But Dr. Dunnivant says it's such a small cost, anyone can re-charge with no questions asked. When you don't see a vehicle underneath the canopy, the energy is transferred for the Advanced Technology Center to use. The Alternative Fuels and Electric Vehicles class is typically offered in the Spring at Gulf Coast State College. Instructors are now getting more students involved. In addition to Alternative Energy, Product Design and Robotic students are also part of the class projects.
