We still think of a battery as that thing in the engine compartment with a
red and a black cable connected to it. But the battery for an electric car
is quite a bit more complex than that.

Nissan is introducing an all new 30 kWh battery in the SV and SL models of
its 2016 LEAF. The new Nissan LEAF battery will extend the range of the car
from 84 miles to 107 miles. It will come with a longer warranty (100,000
miles) and new battery cell configuration. While its dimensions are
identical to the older 24 kWh battery, the two cannot be interchanged
because the software that manages each battery is different.

This video takes us inside the Nissan battery manufacturing plant in Smyrna,
Tennessee and lets us see just exactly how complex building a modern EV
battery really is.
