>Maybe I missed something, but from that piece, I got only the impression
that GM was recycling interior components. They might indeed be repurposing
a Sonic chassis, but I didn't get that idea from the article ...

Toyota never did anything with their prototype E-Com EV.

I can understand as the media mentioned GM's 200mi EV using the Sonic
under-pinnings 10 months ago in January, see

Back 1997 at EVS-14 TMC (Toyota) had the e-com EV there
http://brucedp97.150m.com/evs14/
TMC did not promote it much nor did anyone pay much attention to it when
the RAV4-EV was so much better. See e-com specs
http://www.toyoland.com/concepts/ecom.html

While the e-com looked like a glorified nEV, its top speed was 62mph which
would barely allow its use on U.S. highways. TMC quotes a 60mi range. IMO
its 8kWh NMHi pack would likely only give a ~30mi range.

Bottom line: TMC never seriously offered the e-com. So, U.S. buyers choose
the RAV4-EV because it was available and a better fit to their driving
needs.
