Earlier this month, the company opened a pop-up shop in a walkway at The Shops at La Cantera — a stopgap in its long struggle to establish a foothold in San Antonio ] Tesla Motors Inc. has opened a temporary shop in a walkway at The Shops at La Cantera amid its struggles to build its first showroom in San Antonio. The one-vehicle display, outside a Pottery Barn, is staffed by a single employee hired by Tesla, said Dustin Christensen, La Cantera’s marketing manager. Visitors can test-drive Tesla’s Model S at the temporary store, which opened earlier this month, according to the company’s website. Tesla, a Silicon Valley company that manufactures and sells electric vehicles and batteries, has hit several potholes in its effort to grow in Texas, especially in San Antonio. State law prohibits the company from selling vehicles directly to customers. In its showrooms, customers can check out the cars, but they have to buy them online or out of state. Still, it has built four stores in Texas: one in Austin, one in Dallas and two in Houston. In July, Tesla submitted plans to the city for a showroom and service center along Interstate 10 near Shops at La Cantera. The city zoning commission denied approval, citing concerns that the water supply could be contaminated by electric car batteries. Later, Tesla pulled its proposal from consideration by City Council so that it could work out details of the land purchase with the current property owner, District 8 Councilman Ron Nirenberg told the Express-News in September.
