The marque’s name might tempt you to believe the SP:01 is made in USA, but in reality the Lotus Exige-based performance EV is actually assembled at the company’s Leamington Spa manufacturing facility in UK. The model is bound to go on sale in Asia and Europe in the coming weeks and this first unit is destined for the export market. Billed as being the “world’s lightest and fastest two-seat pure-electric sports car”, the SP:01 promises to offer class-leading power to weight ratio and “blistering acceleration” quoted to stand at 3.9 seconds for the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint when equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox. As standard, the car will come with a single-speed automatic transmission, but clients will also be able to order the vehicle with an optional twin-speed automatic or the manual. That sprint time will be possible with the more powerful SP:01 Performance rated at 286 PS (210 kW) whereas the lesser SP:01 Pure will have 204 PS (150 kW) and cover the run in 5.6 seconds. Both of them will have 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) of torque and share a 37 kWh battery which will provide enough juice for an estimated 288 km (179 miles) based on the NEDC testing cycle. There’s no word about how long it will take to fill up the batteries, but Detroit Electric mentions the car benefits from built-in bi-directional charge and discharge capabilities through a patented home charging and power back-up unit known as “360-Powerback” that effectively transforms the SP:01 into a power source for your home.
