Tesla’s autopilot helps Seattle Uber driver avoid a vehicle crash
31 October 2015

A Seattle Uber driver was saved from what was sure to be a bad accident by
his Tesla’s autopilot feature when it kicked in and slammed on the breaks –
preventing a crash.

High-end electric vehicle maker Tesla presented its new over-the-air
software update for its Model S, the Version 7.0, which has several
auto-pilot or autonomous driving features, to car owners in Beijing on
October 23, the National Business News reported.

An UberSelect driver shared video Wednesday from the dashboard camera of his
Tesla Model S, showing how the car’s self-driving technology helped him
avoid an accident on southbound State Route 99.

Hall added that the autopilot was set to follow cars at the “maximum
distance” and that he couldn’t honk the horn before the driver stopped.

The automatic collision-avoidance system took control in an instant: “I did
not touch the brake”, Hall wrote on his description of the dashcam video he
posted to YouTube.

‘It’s easy to say that in hindsight, I should be going slower, but traffic
tends not to pull out from you in that direction’.

Having said that, on October 19th, Jeffrey Katzenberg, the CEO of DreamWorks
Animation and producer of many of Disney’s hit movies from my childhood,
decimated his Tesla Model S when he was in a brutal vehicle accident,
totaling the auto.

He wrote that the “car did all the work”. According to Hall, this neat save
happened while he was travelling a little under 45 miles per hour, and
occurred without him touching the brake at all.

The Autopilot software is not as completely automated as it is made to
sound: drivers are still required to keep their hands on the steering wheel.
‘In the long term, it will be safer than a person driving’.

Self-Driving Cars More Prone to Accidents, But It's Not Their Fault Michael

Based on narratives supplied in the crash descriptions for the crashes
occurring in autonomous mode, the self-driving vehicles do not appear to be
at fault in any of the crashes that have occurred to date.

The all-electric, high-powered Tesla recently downloaded a few driverless
features to its cars. After driving hundreds of thousands of miles during
tests, its fleet of autonomous vehicles has never caused a single accident,
giving the impression that self-driving cars may already be safer than human
driven ones. It's made of carbon fiber, so it's a relatively lightweight
vehicle. The study puts it this way: "The overall severity of crash-related
injuries involving self-driving vehicles has been lower than for
conventional vehicles".

For a new study, the University of Michigan's Transportation Research
Institute took the crash records of three self-driving vehicles now on
United States roads-Google, Audi, and Delphi-and compared those to the crash
records of all vehicles on USA roads in 2013. There are reasonable
explanations for how the crash rates have been higher in this very small
data set: where a human driver might react to an impending rear-end
collision by driving unsafely, self-driving systems do not - they have no
misgivings about sacrificing themselves, relying on safety systems to keep
passengers safe in a fender-bender.

Yet self-driving cars do have another point in their favor.

Researchers found driverless cars were more likely to be involved in a crash
than conventional vehicles, though the human occupants were likely to be
injured less severely.

The crash reports, along with other public data released by Google, Delphi
and Audi, were then compared to the safety records for all conventional
vehicles in the U.S.in 2013.

What's most interesting, however, is the type of crash that conventional vs.
autonomous cars tend to have. A report by McKinsey & Co. earlier this year
predicted that in the future, widespread adoption of self-driving cars could
cut accident rates by as much as 90 percent.

All 11 crashes involved other motor vehicles while only 68% of conventional
vehicle crashes involved other vehicles and 15.8% involved fixed objects,
14% involved non-fixed objects and 2.2% were non-collision events.

The authors note two important caveats. Today, Bosch announced a "pedestrian
avoidance" technology which it wants to have in all cars by 2018.
