Muscat - After some five years in the making, the region’s first
electricity-powered car is ready to hit the roads.

What makes it even more special is the ‘Made in Oman’ tag.

Looking at it, the Nur Majan – named after the company that built it - comes
across as just another super car with a swanky body and ultra-modern
features. But its USP is style and eco-friendliness fused together.

According to Sultan bin Hamad al Amri, CEO, Nur Majan, and the man behind
the ambitious project, the car has all the fittings, gadgetry and luxury
that one expects from a super car – only it has been built in Oman.

Its special features distinguish it from any other top-of-the-range vehicle,
says Amri. It is said to have features like a solar-powered air conditioning
system. “This will be the first car to be produced in Oman and the first
Arabian electric car. It is a prototype and has many options.”

With a length of 511cm and width of 220cm, Nur Majan is a little bigger than
a standard Mercedes. All four doors with seagull-wing design operate
automatically.

The driver’s door opens without having to push any buttons if you have a
smart key and stand close to the car.

Amri adds that the product is the result of dedicated efforts.

“After years of research and working on the car, I am happy to say that it
is now ready to hit the road. I have got all the necessary permissions and
will use this car as a test drive vehicle till we start production in 2020.”

The project cost RO1.98mn from start to finish. “The concept was finalised
in August 2004 and we started work on the car in 2009. One of our main
difficulties has been getting support and funding. No one was willing to
come forward but after our idea started to materialise, everything fell into
place. We hope to produce many cars for sale once our production facility is
ready in Misfaa, Bausher by 2020. We have the necessary permissions,” says
Amri.

An interesting feature of the car is that its speed will be restricted to
40kmph if the driver has not strapped on the seat belt. It is fitted with a
black box and is equipped with anti-collision sensors.

The maximum speed the car can reach is 360kmph, but Amri will set it at
200kmph as per GCC traffic laws.

A four-hour charge from single phase wiring will take the car 600km. Amri
plans to have special 380v charging kiosks. A 20-minute charge at these
kiosks will be sufficient for the car to run 600km.

The car has 2,669 parts of which 2,642 will be manufactured in Oman while
the rest will be imported from the US and Germany as per specifications. His
upcoming facility will roll out 108 cars per year.

The prototype was put together by a team of eight engineers at a workshop in
Barka. Amri says he consulted fibreglass car experts from the US and Hong
Kong. He even refused the US expert’s offer to move the manufacturing to
Utah.

Amri plans four variants of the car in the future ranging from 400hp to
1,600hp.

According to Amri, the car will be displayed at the Al Araimi Complex on
November 8.
