Auburn Police Department | Twitter ] AUBURN – A man accused of smashing the window of a new Tesla, during what authorities have described as a road rage incident, will be summonsed to court on a property destruction charge, according to Auburn Police. The man, who has not been named by police because he hasn't been charged yet, allegedly thought the male driver of the Tesla ran him off the road near the Auburn Mall around 1:15 p.m. Saturday, police said. The man followed the Tesla on Route 12, police said. At a set of lights, the man allegedly got out of his Toyota Tacoma and walked over to the Tesla. Police said the man then smashed the Tesla's windshield. Two young children were inside the car at the time. The driver of the Toyota allegedly admitted to smashing the windshield with his hands. Auburn Police told the Boston Herald that the drivers of the Tesla and a Tacoma pickup truck were at the Auburn Mall Saturday, and both left at the same time. As they were leaving, the Tesla made a move on the street that the pickup truck driver interpreted as dangerous to him. "I thought he was trying to run me off the road," the unidentified pickup truck driver told police. The man in the truck followed the Tesla to the next set of lights, and when they stopped, got out, marched up to the luxury car and smashed the windshield for his fist as the driver and his two children sat in it. The truck driver then fled. The Tesla driver was able to take a picture of the truck as it sped away from the scene. Auburn police posted the picture on its Facebook page and in a short time, readers were able to identify the truck driver and police were at his door. The truck driver will be summoned to Worcester District Court for a show cause hearing, police said. Sweet A Charlton pickup truck driver who claimed holiday stress got the better of him apologized to cops after he smashed the windshield of a 2015 Tesla with his bare fist during a road rage encounter at the Auburn Mall Saturday, police said. “He gave a statement. He said he was having a bad day. He said, ‘I made a mistake. I know I shouldn’t have done it.’ He wants to pay for it,” Auburn police Detective Sgt. Richard Mills said yesterday. Police are not releasing the man’s name because he has not yet been charged. Mills said he will be summonsed to a clerk magistrate hearing at Worcester District Court. Mills said the owner of the luxury electric vehicle had two young children in the car when the man smashed his windshield, but police don’t think the suspected road rager knew it. Mills said the Tesla’s owner does not live locally and was apparently using the mall’s Tesla Supercharger station. No one in the car was hurt. Mills said the incident occurred about 1:15 p.m. Saturday as both drivers were leaving the mall on Route 12. The Tesla driver told police he thought the other driver, who was behind the wheel of a Toyota Tacoma, tried to run him off the road. “They had some disagreement,” Mills said. “The suspect followed him to the next set of lights.” The truck driver, who Mills said stands over 6 feet tall and weighs more than 250 pounds, approached the Tesla on foot, “yelling,” and lashed out when the car “lurched at him.” The Tesla driver blamed his nerves and lack of familiarity with the new car. It was then, Mills said, the suspect “smashed the window with his hand.” The Tesla driver took a photo of the pickup as it was leaving the scene. Auburn police posted it on Facebook and tracked the suspect to Charlton, thanks to tips on social media. “The main takeaway is don’t get angry in traffic, and don’t get out of your car,” Mills said.
