I now have a thousand more miles on my Leaf and much more experience at
hypermiling. We have had a leased Leaf for three years but my main technique
was going slow. I found out you don't have to just go slow. A better
technique is to play energy consumption and go as fast or slow as the car will
allow. It's surprising how fast you can go on 5 miles per kwh especially with
a tail wind so some of it is luck. Going down I made a mistake a CSU Fresno.
Couldn't figure out the system. Spent hours there till a kind soul helped me.
The trip took 24 hours from SF to LA(Hollywood). I then had my trusty beast to
carry me to and fro from my daughters apartment. I spent three days at the
2016 Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competition and Bassoon Symposium at the Colburn
School caddy corner to the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Disney hall charges 9
dollars flat fee on the weekends and charging is free. During the week LA
Water and Light gives free charging for four hours around the corner on
Hope street. On the way back I stopped at Kia of Valencia Chademo, then
Nissan of Valencia, which is not on Plug share, to top off. Then Nissan of
Bakersfield, Nissan of Visalia, CSU Fresno(exactly follow the directions. ****
are very important as well as ####. Then Atwater, Tracy and then home with 15
miles left. These were all quick charges except in Valencia going over the pass
and Bakersfield going over the pass. I topped off using level 2. All were free
except Tracy and Atwater. Coming back I did it faster in speed keeping it to
one ball and looking at the instant readout and keeping it at 5miles or more
per KWH. My average was 5kwh. This is 45 to 60mph most of the time. I
coasted when I could and used regen when I went past 70. Moved between eco and
regular drive depending on traffic. Eco can slow you too much except going
down into the central valley when you can really fly.I reached Bakersfield with
25 miles range left. the other way with 18 miles. I switched
from Eco to Drive to coasting for about 15 miles in the valley. Didn't hurt
to have a tail wind as a storm came through. You can only do this trip in a
Chademo vehicle down the 99 Freeway. Going North I did it in 19 hours with all
the experience I gained going down. You need to go down the 101 if your car is
CCS. Lawrence Rhodes Lovin the Leaf
