Guatemala to launch assembling plant of electric cars with tech support from
China

Guatemalan manufacturer Luka Electronics unveiled a range of electronic
vehicles on December 17 in Guatemala City, which it aims to produce in
quantities in 2016 with China’s technical and training support.

"It will help people save a lot, because you can drive from 80 to 100
kilometers with a limited and affordable load of power." ...

(Soundbite) Julio Sosa, Operation Manager of Luka Electronics
"For December 2016, we have two goals. The first is to have the thousandth
vehicle assembled in Guatemala. The second is to have the first electric bus
commuting on the streets of Guatemala. I'll go a little further: we expect
to have high-speed electric vehicle during the first quarter of 2017." ...

Guatemala highlights its position on the EV map by announcing its intention
to be an electric vehicle manufacturer.

A company called Luka Electronics hopes to launch an assembly line next
year, in partnership with Chinese companies.

We shouldn’t expect much from the investment of only $500,000, but it could
be the beginning of a larger move for the small country.

“Luka Electronics has decided to invest about 500,000 U.S. dollars to
establish an assembly plant in Masagua municipality, south of Guatemala
City, to churn out vehicles ranging from sedans, pickup trucks to buses.”

“Luka Electronics executives formed their idea to set up the assembling
plant in Guatemala, after paying a visit to China where four workers can
assemble an electric car in 45 minutes.

Considering the potential demand of the local market, they then became
determined that such an initiative will pay off as local drivers spend less
and the environment is hugely benefited.”

Julio Sosa, Operation Manager of Luka Electronics said:

“For December 2016, we have two goals. The first is to have the
thousandth vehicle assembled in Guatemala. The second is to have the first
electric bus commuting on the streets of Guatemala. I’ll go a little
further: we expect to have high-speed electric vehicle during the first
quarter of 2017.”

Can you imagine spending Q8 per hundred kilometers traveled by car? That is
what gives the first electric car that will be assembled in Guatemala.

This is Luka, name originated from the mixture of family name investors. It
is powered by a car battery that recharges gel in six hours and reaches
speeds up to 55 mph.

Luka was born after the company Communications Systems and Services (CSS)
initiated a partnership with the Chinese producer Wulian to expand this
technology in Central America.

In October the first units will be imported, but in March 2016 plans to open
assembly plant will be located in Masagua, Escuintla.
Q50 Mil is the price of electric cars.

Julio Sosa, CSS operations manager, said that this is an investment of US $
500,000 and generate employment for over 50 people.

One such vehicle can he put together in 45 minutes by four people he said.
The price range between Q50 and Q60 thousand thousand.

This is not the first time a vehicle is assembled in the country. Superior
Industries Company in 1977 produced the first car Guatemalan named Chato
1300, a truck designed to support several tons of weight.

Automotive Cidea it joined the dealership, which was owned by Julio
Lowenthal. The plant was at that time in the capital 13.

El Chato was used by former President Kjell Laugerud García.

This had a cost of 750 thousand Q2.

Pilot

Empresa Electrica de Guatemala (EEGSA) said it will begin in October a pilot
plan for technology.

Ivette Zambrano, EEGSA spokeswoman said that for people who purchase the
car, could reduce the cost of a kilowatt hour of 10 pm to 6 am -for
recargarlo- but still must establish the mechanism.

According to Sosa, the rate could go from Q1.25 to Q0.95 per kilowatt hour
and would be charged in six hours.

The engine is connected to an inverter and are easy to repair parts, the
company claims.

New technology

Gel batteries are maintenance free and are changed every two years.
60 watt motor achieves a speed of 55 kilometers per hour.
For eight hours to charge and runs over 100 kilometers.
The company will assemble electric motorcycles and tuk-tuks.

Recharge

To load a special vehicle is needed outlet and connects to the normal 110
volt electricity supply.

The load average is 1.3 kilowatt per hour, that is, for six hours to be
consumed 7.8 kilowatt. With the reduced rate of Q0.95, Q7.41 spend, and
could travel up to 100 kilometers.

In the future, CSS seeks to service stations in restaurants, shops and other
points of the city.

The car expends energy only when in motion and can be used as a second
family car.

Drivers could activate the load with a text message, like recharging a cell.

Requires reviewing oil, liquid or any other type of belt which a
conventional vehicle commonly used fuel. Maintenance is reduced to buy gel
batteries every two years.

The newspaper. Communications Systems and Services (CSS) announced LuKa
assembly plant in Masagua, with a minimum investment of $ 500,000, which
would assemble 1,000 units per month seater vehicle. Masagua plant would
generate 50 jobs. In one line, four workers can assemble a vehicle in 45
minutes.

The first two vehicles LuKa brand, one of two passengers and a pick up,
already circulating on city streets to promote models, testing speed and
performance, and to astonish drivers and pedestrians who cross his path.

The company Communications Systems and Services (SCC) has the representation
of the mark for Central and since October will make available to its
customers in Guatemala the first fleet of electric cars to be imported from
China.

Julio Sosa, CSS manager, trust in the potential of this market, which
already has plans to install an assembly in the town of Masagua in
Escuintla, which would have an output of 1,000 units per month. This plant
will generate 50 jobs, says the entrepreneur who after a visit to the
assembly in China, reports that in one line, four workers can assemble a
vehicle in 45 minutes.

Reduce costs

The two-passenger car is available at prices ranging between US $ 6,500 and
US $ 7,800, but produce it in the country would have a low price to 15%. Is
a personal vehicle that reaches an average of 40 kilometers (km) per hour
speed, engine uses a 60 volt battery with a gel loading four hours achieves
a yield of 150 km.

With the reduction of tariffs for electric service and if the authorities
approve implement a fee for the hours valley, where energy consumption is
the lowest, Sosa says that households would have a significant saving of
using an electric vehicle .

A small fuel truck performs about one hundred kilometers with two gallons of
gasoline, ie have a closest to the Q50 spending; while a valley in Q0.95
rate per kilowatt / hour could make the same journey at a cost of Q7.41,
Sosa said.

Other models that are imported CSS pick up with engine capacity of 72 volts
and 1,500 pounds of cargo; four-passenger sedan, nine minibuses up to 14
passengers; tricycles basins 1.5 meters and police cars.

The gel battery lasts two years and is recharged at any outlet and the
guarantee offered by CSS by vehicles is two years.

Trend

Also Empresa Electrica de Guatemala SA, plans to test electric vehicles with
high performance, to encourage the use of this technology among Guatemalans
and harness the decline in energy prices is expected to remain stable in the
coming years.

Cuba is a country that is taking steps in this direction. Last month it
announced the purchase of 719 electric vehicles sedans to the Chinese
manufacturer BYD. The fleet was acquired serve to promote tourism on the
island. Mexico, Ecuador and Chile are the leaders in using this technology
in Latin America.

Regional Forum

Held this month (September 2) in Mexico the Latin American Forum on Clean
Transportation, which will serve as a contribution to promoting the use of
electric vehicles in the region. Organizers say that even the tax and
regulatory incentives are insufficient and dialogue for the design of
policies for electric mobility is needed.
