Daimler's Mercedes-Benz has signed a sourcing deal with South Korea's SK Innovation for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. SK Innovation, primarily an oil refining company belonging to local conglomerate SK Group, built its first battery plant in Seosan, 150km south of the country's capital city Seoul, in 2012. The factory has the capacity to produce 15,000 lithium-ion battery sets per year, which it supplies to Kia Motors and China's Beijing Automotive Industry Holdings. The company plans to expand capacity further when required. South Korea's two largest EV battery manufacturers are LG Chem and Samsung SDI which have supply contracts with most major global automakers. SK Innovation disclosed on Wednesday that it signed an agreement with global auto giant Daimler AG to supply lithium-ion battery cells for electric cars that Mercedes-Benz aims to roll out starting 2017. Mercedes-Benz’s parent company Daimler will assemble the battery cells into battery packs that will be employed in its electric vehicles. This is a “large-scale project” to supply batteries for various models of Mercedes-Benz cars, the company said. The Korean battery maker said its electric vehicle business raked in 178.0 billion won ($145.4 million) in sales last year, and it is considering adding lithium-ion battery lines this year after bagging the Daimler deal.
