Regarding Mate Rimac, you can still read his thread on the bmw at diyelectriccar. He was using series DC motors and zorching them in races around 2009-10, so he became disgusted and hired people to develop his own AC motors and develop his AWD supercar before the Tesla S, spending most of his life savings in the process. Very impressive work.
