% The news item sez S.D. Car2Go will put their Smart EVs up for sale during
the month of May. I have contacted them to find out what the procedure will
be used as this could be a good opportunity for the public to buy a Smart
EV.

*I did get a quick response from the parent company (daimler.com) rep:

"The decision to sell the vehicle isn't definitive just yet. We may
repurpose them internally, but if we go that way I've passed your
information to the right person internally who will get in touch"

So, those interested should hold off until I hear from them (if at all). In
my many years of providing free help to the EV-cause, I have helps entities
to sell their EVs by getting the word out. So, as soon as I know, I will let
everyone know.

Looking at:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smart_electric_drive#United_States
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car2Go#Locations
leads me to believe these are 2nd gen ~2011-2012 Smart EVs, which only have
a 3kW on-board L2 charger, and do not have a L3 charging ability. r: ~75mi
ts:~62mph

Looking for a price of a used ~2012 Smart EV I found a SF dealership selling
a couple for $8k:
http://bmwsf.calls.net/used/used-vehicle-inventory?makes=smart&gclid=CIrn4ruyx8sCFdgXgQodd0kDtQ&_vsrefdom=p.2345

And carfax has a 2012 model for sale in San Diego about $6.2k:

San Diego does have warm weather, but not hot as it is close to the ocean.
One would have to drive far and up over the mountain range to get out the
heat of the desert. So their packs are likely have not had heat-stroke. But
these are rentals (Electric or not, rentals do get abused).

*My question to those that would be interested, ?How much would you pay for
their Smart EVs? (what price range do you think they should target?)

SAN DIEGO — San Diego’s leading car sharing company will soon replace its
all-electric vehicle fleet with gas-powered cars due to a lack of charging
stations ...

"It's a lesson to all of us that we have to work harder to build the
infrastructure necessary to support electric vehicles and other
transportation modes," City Councilman Todd Gloria said ...

"It's disappointing because we as a city are on a pathway to a 100 percent
clean energy future and we can't do it without converting our vehicles to
electric," she said. "This is a step backward, so we have to regroup and
figure out some new solutions."

Officials said part of any solution will likely be a plan San Diego Gas &
Electric finalized in late January to install 3,500 charging stations across
the county over the next three years.

[More EVSE] won’t happen quickly enough for Car2Go to reconsider the switch,
which starts May 1 and should be complete within a month.

The company made San Diego the only North American city with an all-electric
fleet when it launched service here five years ago, but company officials
say that’s no longer sustainable ...

"What we expected as far as charging infrastructure versus what we were
delivered just hasn't added up," said Car2Go spokeswoman Dacyl Armendariz.

"We're just not able to keep the cars charged, and people aren't able to
charge them on their own," she said. "We're still committed to electric
vehicles — it works in some of our cities in Europe where they have more
robust charging infrastructure. We just don't have the infrastructure we
need here to make it work now."

Many of the company’s 40,000 San Diego members say they often worry their
Car2Go will run out of charge before they finish their trip, Armendariz
said.

A fully charged Smart Car running on electric can travel a maximum of 65
miles ... she said.

In San Diego, an average of 20 percent of Car2Go’s fleet of 400 vehicles is
unavailable at any given time because the cars are either being charged or
because they don’t have enough electricity in them to be driven.

Josh Moskowitz, a Car2Go regional manager, said that dynamic will allow the
company to replace the electric cars with a smaller number of gas-powered
vehicles, although he said the exact number was still being decided.

The switch will attract new members, he said, because it will increase
confidence they can reach their destination.

"I think we'll attract quite a few people who were on the fence because of
'range anxiety' with the electric vehicles," Moskowitz said ...
