LONDON: The world's first fully electric double-decker bus was launched by London's transport authority on Tuesday (Mar 15), and will start service in the British capital next month. Five of the buses, made by China automaker BYD, will run on two routes in London. The bus represents a breakthrough in public transportation, according to BYD, which had to come up with a new compact battery design to allow the technology to be applied to the double-decker. At the unveiling, Managing Director of BYD Auto Europe Isbrand Ho said: “This is actually the first double-decker, fully electric vehicle that can travel 190 miles (306km) in the world - bar none.” BYD responded to a challenge from London Mayor Boris Johnson four years ago to come up with a fully electric double-decker bus, in a bid to help with the city’s dire air pollution levels. The bus can carry 81 passengers for 306km before it needs to be recharged, a process that takes four hours.
