The update:
"According to Sgt. Harding, the car was a Toyota Prius, which is a
Hybrid, not an electric car. However, the vehicle still required a
button to be pushed in order to engage the parking brakes."

Duh, almost any car requires a manual action to engage parking brake,
even as simple as moving the gear selector back to P and still plenty
people
forget that, causing very many "runaway" vehicles on daily basis.
I don't see how the Prius is different, only because its parking brake
is operated electrically instead of mechanically?

ST. GEORGE, Utah - + Video - St. George Police were called to the scene
of
an unusual accident around 10:30 Wednesday morning. The report came in
to
dispatch that a parked car had rolled backwards off a cliff on Red Hills
Parkway, crashing into ravine about 75 feet below.

Fortunately the man who had been driving it wasn't inside at the time.

St. George Police Traffic Supervisor Craig Harding said had anyone been
in
the car as a passenger they wouldn't have survived.

"This vehicle is probably totaled," said Officer Harding, "There were
some
rocks that were chipped off but no damage to any property at all, just
the
vehicle itself, and nobody was injured, thank goodness."

Officer Harding said this isn't the first time that vehicles have gone
off
this cliffside in this particular spot.

"I've been a cop for 33 years here and we've had several cars and
motorcycles go off of this very embankment into this very spot," said
Harding.

The city built metal fence barriers along the parking lot, but the car
managed to roll backwards between the two fence lines.

"He indicated that he pushed a button to activate the brakes, stepped
out of
the vehicle and the brakes weren't activated and it rolled backwards off
of
the hill."

"This is kind of an unusual accident, in the fact that it's an electric
car," Harding said. "I'm not familiar with them but apparently there's a
button you have to activate the brakes with and that didn't occur."
