The British company’s work on the car was confirmed in a government document revealing public funding for “Dyson to develop a new battery electric vehicle at their headquarters in Malmesbury, Wiltshire”. The document, buried within the National Infrastructure Delivery Plan, said: “This will secure £174m of investment in the area, creating over 500 jobs, mostly in engineering.” The move would pit Dyson against Silicon Valley behemoths Google and Apple, which are also developing cars. While electric cars are thought by many to be the future of the industry, take-up has been limited as battery constraints and availability of charging points — leading to so-called “range anxiety” — hold back consumers from embracing the technology. The latest version of the Nissan Leaf, an all-electric car, has a reported range of 155 miles, while the new BMW i3 can travel up to 99 miles on a charge. Electric vehicles account for just 1 per cent of cars in Europe. But with stringent emissions targets coming into force across the EU, all leading manufacturers are working to produce electric or hybrid versions of their cars. Dyson refused to comment on the document and said it never commented on products under development. The government document was later updated to remove references the the Dyson car. The company has an event planned for next week in which it has promised to unveil a number of new products. The company, founded by Sir James Dyson, pledged to invest more than £1bn into developing new battery technology last year. The group bought Satki3, a battery technology company spun out of the University of Michigan which hopes to double the life of batteries, for $90m last year. It specialises in solid state batteries, which have the potential to hold more charge than the current lithium-ion batteries but are more unstable. At the time of the acquisition Sir James said Satki3 had “developed a breakthrough in battery technology”. 1% Proportion of cars in Europe that are electric vehicles Dyson’s work in the arena was thought to be aimed at providing power for products such as its cordless vacuum cleaners, which account for about half of its £1.7bn global sales. Its entry into developing the technology for cars marks a significant step away from its core markets of upmarket household appliances and hand-dryers. Last week the company received a £16m grant from the UK government towards battery research. Dyson’s revenue rose more than a quarter in 2015, while its earnings were up nearly a fifth to £448m before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation. While many car manufacturers buy in batteries from suppliers such as Bosch, some make their own. Tesla, the US electric car group founded by Elon Musk, is building a “gigafactory” in Nevada to manufacture lithium-ion batteries.
