Twister, a hybrid vehicle, has both bicycle and motorcycle seats

BENGALURU: The model of a hybrid battery-powered bike-cycle designed by a
city-based start-up bagged the Excellent Design Award in the International
Bike Festival in Taipei earlier this month.

Ultraviolette Automotive, co-founded by three Bengalurean engineers Narayan
Subramaniam, Niraj Rajamohan and Preetham Murthy a year ago, aims at
revolutionising the experience of urban transport by addressing the problems
of the last mile and vehicles deterrent to the environment.

“Vehicles in India are not really suited for the urban needs,” says Niraj.
“Many office-goers buy high-end cycles but don’t ride to work because they
don’t want to get sweaty.”

The trio and three others part of the team — Karthik Kannan, Ajay Rao and
Rajaneesh — are working on the final version of Twister, a hybrid vehicle
that leans against one of the walls of the start-up’s Jayanagar
office-workshop.

The bike gets its name from the central bar that can turn 180 degrees. There
is a bicycle and motorcycle seat on each side and you can adjust it
depending on whether you want to pedal or motor your way along. So users can
motor to work and pedal back home.

“That way they arrive at work feeling fresh and get some exercise on their
way back,” explains Narayan, who has worked for automotive companies like
Mahindra, Toyota and Volkswagen.

The start-up is also developing an app and batteries for its vehicles.
“We’ve go the patent for this, but not the rest, so we can’t talk about it
yet,” says Niraj.

The same goes for Ultraviolette’s compact Zombie Glider that can take you to
the Metro and from the station to your office. The battery-operated vehicle
can be dismantled and carried by hand. “This one is almost ready,” says
Narayan. “It weighs around 5 or 6 kg and anyone from a 10- to 50-year-old
can use it.”

The three friends are planning for a pilot in Europe in June or July. “The
glider is more suited to European cities like Amsterdam, Paris and
Stockholm, where the public transport is efficient,” says Narayan. “After
that, we could bring it to the Indian market — mostly gated communities and
big college and university campuses. We have already had trials in such
places.”

Twister, likely to weigh between 15 and 20 kg, is better suited to the roads
of Tier I Indian cities than Zombie Glider, its designers believe. “You
could use the motor partially and pedal along too, if you think the vehicle
is too heavy, and the app will help you customise settings” says Niraj.

The six-member team is in the process of designing another vehicle — a
high-tech electric bike — specifically for the Indian market. “The prototype
for that should be ready in about six months. It’ll be different from other
electric two-wheelers on the road in that it will be high-end in terms of
tech and experience, but accessible to the middle class in terms of price,”
says Narayan.
