'Cyclists' provide pedal power for a Cine Toto film screening

Mobile cinema tours southeastern Mexico and delivers 'smiles and culture'

In Noh Pec, Quintana Roo, this week kids were lining up to see a film for
which they didn’t have to buy a ticket. All they had to do was pedal a
bicycle for a while.

The film was delivered through a mobile cinema which is traveling through
poor areas of southeastern Mexico, a cinema whose electrical needs are
filled by solar panels and bicycle power.

Cine Móvil Toto, or Mobile Cinema Toto, whose slogan is “All places, all
people,” was founded in 2012 with the intention of making entertainment
ecological. The project was created through Mexican crowdfunding platform
Fondeadora, and receives additional funding from the Culture Secretariat’s
Eficine 189 fiscal stimulus program.

In the words of its coordinator, Rodrigo Soto, “We bring smiles and culture
while building community. (We offer) an active and participatory cinema.”

“Tourist areas are very pretty,” said Toto team member Seidi, “but just
behind them there is no electric power or tap water. It is to those people
that we bring this cinema. It would be real cool if we could bring them
loads of wonderful things.”

Armando, formerly a bank clerk and now the third member of the Toto team,
explains what compelled him to join: “Humdrum life is tiring and boring.
Something inside me told me I had to do something.”

The team has just embarked on its second sojourn through southeastern
Mexico, the Toto Film Tour 2016, traveling 3,000 kilometers from Mexico City
to the Yucatán peninsula state of Quintana Roo.

By the end of the tour, Rodrigo, Seidi and Armando expect to have traveled
about 20,000 kilometers and offered 90 film screenings at the same number of
locations in five states: Quintana Roo, Yucatán, Campeche, Tabasco and
Chiapas.

The screenings are sustainable, dynamic, fun and free, said the team. To
power the projector, the crew uses two 500-watt photovoltaic solar cells,
and a 600-watt four-bicycle generator.

Films start at dusk and are chosen from a repertoire of Mexican films
donated by Imcine, the Mexican Institute of Cinematography. Children flock
to the four bike generators, eager to contribute with their pedaling to
power the projector.

The 2016 tour has already visited nine Quintana Roo locations. In Noh Pec,
children waited in line as patiently as they could for their turn at the
pedals.

Esmeralda Vázquez, 12, was one. She lamented the lack of a proper cinema in
her town. “To watch movies I have to go to Chetumal or buy them in Carrillo
Puerto, or watch what’s on TV. I’ve always wanted to see a real movie
theater.”

Alberto Ruiz, 11, had already pedaled three times and was back in line when
he told Milenio that “It feels cool, it’s better this way because we can
exercise. I like the movies, I enjoy them.”

The first Toto Film Tour ran for 18 months, between 2013 and 2015, during
which the three crew members offered 36 screenings in 32 different
locations.
