An electric car has set off from Plymouth on a 2,500-mile road trip to prove
the eco-friendly vehicles don't have a problem with range.

The epic journey began in Plymouth at 9am this morning and will take in
sites across England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

Jess Shanahan, a motoring journalist, is taking the challenge to prove that
concerns about the range of electric cars don’t match the reality of
technology.

A spokesman for the challenge said: “Electric cars have plenty of range, and
what better way to prove that than drive Route 57 in one?

“America has Route 66, now we have Route 57 – and we’re driving it as
Eco-Tourists!”

Route 57 is made up of ten smaller journeys and should take Jess around 19
days to complete from April 7 to April 26.

Jury’s Inn Hotel staff helped design the road trip, which includes 57
must-see destinations including Exeter Cathedral, Bristol’s SS Great Britain
and Scotland’s Loch Lomond.

The vehicle being used is the Kia Soul EV, provided by DriveElectic, which
can travel an estimated 93 miles before needing to pit in for a top-up in
electricity.

The electric car can recharge in a speedy 33 minutes at rapid DC-charging
points provided at motorway service stations.

Typical public chargers take around 4-5 hours, meanwhile charging the
vehicle from your home could take 11-14 hours using a standard UK 3-pin
plug.
