The Redwood Coast Energy Authority of Eureka opened 10 electric vehicle
charging stations across Humboldt County on Thursday.

“This is a major step forward for electric vehicles in Humboldt County
because we really need the infrastructure up here. It’s a great way to
tackle green house emissions,” RCEA’s Executive Director Matthew Marshall
said before cutting a ribbon in front of two new charging stations at a
ceremony in the St. Joseph Hospital parking lot.

Humboldt County, along with the rest of California, has been a swift adopter
of electric vehicles, also known as EVs. The International Council on Clean
Transportation, an independent nonprofit organization, ranked Eureka third
in the nation for the share of EVs that made up new vehicles purchases in a
2015 study.

Additionally, California is home to almost half of all the nation’s plug-in
EVs, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

“We certainly have pretty high demand around here for electric vehicles,”
Trevor Harper, general manager of Harper Motors in Eureka, said. “Range
anxiety is a concern for a lot of my customers, but with more and more
stations popping up, some of that is easing.”

The Schatz Energy Research Center at Humboldt State University served as
chief engineer for the project, receiving grant funding from the California
Energy Commission. Peter Lehman, the center’s founder, and several of his
project engineers attended the ceremony.

“If it were completely empty it’d cost me about $4 and take a few hours to
charge,” Lehman said as he plugged one of the new station’s cords into his
Nissan Leaf after the ribbon was cut.

Lehman said the addition of charging infrastructure is key to stimulating
plug-in EV growth nationwide, a part of the electric vehicle market that has
been projected to grow considerably, particularly in northern California.

PG&E, for example, has a $160 million proposal under review by the
California Public Utilities Commission to allow the construction of 7,600
electric vehicle charging stations in northern California over three years.
Last year the commission rejected PG&E’s original proposal to build 25,000
stations, citing concerns of “unfair competition” in its September ruling
...

Marshall added that all of RCEA’s 14 charging stations in Humboldt County
currently draw PG&E electricity.

As of March, there were 294 electric vehicles registered in Humboldt County,
roughly 0.2 percent of total registered vehicles, according to the
California Department of Motor Vehicles.

“At first, when my charging station was maybe the only one, travelers coming
through were desperately using it,” Harper said. “There just weren’t many
charging options along the North Coast. I definitely think as more of these
stations are set up, the more EVs I’ll sell.”

EUREKA, Calif. - On Thursday, the electric vehicle charging network grew a
little larger on the North Coast. The grand opening of nine new vehicle
charging stations in Humboldt County started with one located at St. Joseph
Hospital in Eureka.

The new charging locations were built using grants from the California
Energy Commission and matching funds from the Redwood Coast Energy
Authority. Other project partners contributed as well. The RCEA teamed up
with the Schatz Energy Research Center and PG&E to decide where the newest
additions would be most beneficial to electric vehicle owners.

RCEA Executive Director Matthew Marshall is among many who advocate for the
use of electric vehicles in Humboldt County.

"We have the third highest share of electric vehicles as far as new vehicle
sales of anywhere in the United States," said Marshall. "So we're number
three as far as people buying electric vehicles when they go out to buy a
new car. So that's really where this public infrastructure enables people
to really use those vehicles."

Marshall said the advantages of buying an electric vehicle are numerous.
Adding, that there are a number of environmental benefits which include
reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing air pollution.

From the individual consumer standpoint, it is also considerably cheaper to
drive on electricity. “Charging your car at home is maybe half the price of
gasoline or even less than that,” Marshall said. “One of the things that's
great about electric vehicles as an alternative vehicle technology is, for
the most part, you're charging at home in your garage and it's like your
cell phone that you plug in at night and it's ready to go in the morning.”

Chris Smith is another electric car advocate. He is the happy owner of a
Nissan Leaf. “"It goes like a rocket ship on the highway because there's no
drag," said Smith. "It's just like a giant battery, it's like a sewing
machine.. VRRMM! You're up to top speed in a second and I feel good about
the environment."

There are now three charging stations run by the Redwood Coast Energy
Authority in Eureka. Which makes for a total of 14 now in Humboldt County.
For electric car owners, the California Clean Vehicle rebate project has
processed more than 424 thousand dollars in rebate funding to date in
Humboldt. The rebate comes from a total of 229 purchased battery electric
vehicle and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Currently, there are several apps available that electric vehicle owners can
download, that show the location of every vehicle charging station in the
county.
