2016 Nissan Leaf Attacks Tesla – Ends Up Shooting Itself
May 8, 2016

If there is one competitor not worth attacking, it’s Tesla. Though the EV
automaker has been running into a number of problems lately, it is only
smart to take aim at it when there is something better on offer.

That’s not what the Nissan Leaf brings to the table though.

Nissan decided to take a cheeky swipe at the 2017 Tesla Model 3 through an
advert called ‘No Reservations Necessary’ which implies how difficult it is
for buyers of Tesla’s new sedan to get ahold of the vehicle given that it
attracted over 400,000 reservations in less than a month of its first
reveal.

What Nissan doesn’t realize is that it is promoting the 2016 Leaf against
one of the most anticipated 2017 model vehicles. There are no reservations
necessary for the Leaf because no one’s buying it.

The marketing team who came up with the idea for the poster just shot Nissan
in the foot. It basically brings out the question – where on earth is the
2017 Nissan Leaf?

While the advert is technically correct in saying that Nissan’s electric
hatch is the present EV sales leader, its lifetime sales of almost 220,000
units pale in comparison to the 400,000 bookings made for the Model 3.

The Leaf is currently experiencing its worst sales performance since 2012.
From January through April this year, it has only sold 3,718 units in the
US.

How Would 2017 Nissan Leaf End Up – Pretty Or Ugly?

Most of the 2017 models of notable mass market EVs have already shown their
faces, except for the Nissan Leaf – so far no one knows what the second-gen
Leaf looks like.

We do know from a number of early reports that it is going to be based on
the Nissan IDS Concept.

Competitors such as the Chevrolet Bolt, BMW i3, Ford Fusion Electric, and
Hyundai Ioniq Electric haven’t really wowed with how they appear
design-wise, so Nissan has a chance to seize the spotlight with a standout
design with its signature electric hatch.

It is an opportunity to undo the damage done by the design of the present
Leaf model. It is no stranger to ceaseless criticisms, though it has also
benefited from its fair share of sympathizers who take a more understanding
position with regard the then budding EV segment of 2010.

Much Higher Industry Standards

But it is beyond its nascence now. People are beginning to treat the segment
as a natural part of the entire automotive industry, so Nissan can no longer
get away with silly, quirky designs.

If the 2017 Leaf doesn’t excel in its design, there are plenty more options
for buyers. Just take a look at what has happened to the Toyota Prius; it
has lost favor among consumers due to its looks despite its many efficiency
and performance improvements.

The same is happening for the present model Leaf. So far this year it has
not managed to touch four-digit monthly sales numbers, despite its
best-in-class range. Even if the 2017 model offers single-lane autonomous
driving and more than 200 miles of range, buyers are still going to judge it
based on what they see.

For now the IDS Concept offers hope. Even if the new Leaf winds up a heavily
diluted version of the concept’s design, it would still be a refreshing
sight and significant improvement from what is presently on offer.
