QUEEN’S PARK – Tim Hortons and McDonald’s across northern Ontario will soon
be home to new electric vehicle charging stations installed through a
government program.

The $20 million program announced finalists on April 28 for contracts to
build 250 charging stations across the province to address battery range
fears of electric vehicle drivers.

The charging stations will be a mix of two styles – a regular charging unit
taking a few hours to recharge a battery from empty; and a fast charger
using DC voltage to bring a battery from 0 to 80 per cent in half-an-hour.

In southern Ontario a wide range of partners, 27 in total, were selected
from a request for proposal process started last fall reaching out to
private enterprise and municipal government.

In Northern Ontario the government has awarded a contract for about 25 fast
charging stations at Tim Hortons’ and McDonald’s locations. Koben System
Inc. of Mississauga is negotiating with the two international food chains
for the final arrangements and details about particular franchises receiving
the chargers is still weeks away.

“We’re installing fast chargers at leading retailers and high-profile
franchises, like Tim Hortons and McDonald’s, to give drivers confidence that
finding a charging station will be as easy as finding a gas station in
Ontario. When all chargers are installed by March 31, 2017, Ontario will
have a robust EV network that will help fight climate change and reduce
greenhouse gases by making owning an electric vehicle a more practical
option, no matter where in the province you live,” Minister Steven Del Duca
said of the announcement.

Drivers would also be able to enjoy the comforts of the restaurants while
their car is charging.

A spokesperson for the minister’s office said the company was selected
because the government believes it is capable of building the network across
all of Ontario.

Says the government of the program, “This expansion in charging
infrastructure across the province will help address ‘range anxiety,’ a
common concern of consumers regarding the distance electric vehicles can
travel compared to traditional vehicles. By building a more robust network
of public chargers across Ontario, electric vehicle owners can now plan
longer trips with more confidence that a charging station is as readily
available as a gas station is.

A shift to low- and zero-emission vehicles is vital to the fight against
climate change and achieving Ontario's greenhouse gas pollution reduction
target of 80 per cent below 1990 levels by 2050.”

The Ministry of Transportation also noted that in May 2015 Ontario became
the first province in Canada to set a mid-term greenhouse gas pollution
reduction target of 37 per cent below 1990 levels by 2030. There are about
6,400 electric vehicles currently on the road in Ontario.
