That was also my immediate thought (being an engineer) so all I can think is that the solar roofing is directional, like shingles, so you can't flip it around. They could have made two variants though, one with + at top and one at bottom, so you just would have to alternate them and can plug them directly into each other without long wires, similar to how adjacent solar panels wire to each other in one string using polarized weather-proof connectors.
