>While driving Highway 1 may have no pass it has several big hills. I'm not
sure the up and down would match the pass but I'd have to drive it and find
out. At night there is a head wind going North. Not sure I have the
cojones to try it not to mention a huge climb out of Pacifica.<

The 1000' climb near Pacifica is about half of what you already did getting
to and from Santa Cruz, so it should not be a problem for your Leaf.

As you said, doing a trial run to see what you can do, IMO is a good idea.
With the taking of Hwy 1 to get to Santa Cruz (78mi) sometime in the future
being your fact finding goal, perhaps a half-way jaunt would be first step.

Looking at a map
https://goo.gl/maps/iProhkKC6VS2
From SF to Santa Cruz via Hwy 1 is 49mi. From SF to Half Moon Bay (HMB) is
30mi. HMB has a public EVSE:

http://api.plugshare.com/view/location/60831
Half Moon Bay City Hall
PlugScore 10.0 [very good]
Ports 2 EV Plug (J1772)s
EV Plug (J1772) ChargePoint 7.2kw
Address 714 Kelly Ave Half Moon Bay, CA 94019
Cost $1/ hr [charging] + $1 parking
[read the driver's comments on this EVSE]

While your 75+mi range may not 'need' a charge at the 30mi point to get back
home, IMO it would be a good experience to use that EVSE as well as reduce
any concerns/angst some might have.

If you left your SF house charged and drove Hwy 1 south to HMB and plugged
in, you could spend a couple hours there charging, walking around, and enjoy
the town. This might even be a good way to include/bring-along that someone
special to enjoy it together. After you return home you would have
experienced EV-tourism (which is similar to eco-tourism).

I'll assume you already carry a Chargepoint rfid card with you encase of
emergencies as their brand of public EVSE is the most prevalent. But if you
don't, you can still pay for a charge using an app or by calling them:
http://www.chargepoint.com/faq/
... You can easily start a session with your ChargePoint card, using the
ChargePoint mobile app, with an RFID credit card or by calling driver
support at 888-758-4389. The 888 number is listed on each ChargePoint
station and on the back of your ChargePoint card.

You may want to install their free app as well as Plugshare.com 's on your
mobile:

Before the Spanish, the Ohlone (Costanoans) were 20,000+

Afterward below 3000. The missions changed the area for rural agriculture
use, primarily cattle, horses, and oxen.

Later being a fishing port town, the population was diverse with the growth

The 1906 earthquake destroyed adobe (mud-brick) and (fired-clay) brick
buildings in Half Moon Bay. Only the flexible wooden homes and shops
survived the quake, and many of those early wooden structures still remain.

Using the map:

There is plenty to see and do within walking distance:
-Spanish-town (one of HMB's former names) museum
-HMB and also Moonside bakeries
-A HMB winery tasting
(+more)

I have not been at HMB in over a year, but when I did I liked to visit:
http://www.sanbenitohouse.com/the-deli/
The little building off to the side of the main San Benito House (bar,
grill, gallery, +ritzy)

Look at the image from the above side to see their menu:
http://www.sanbenitohouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/316_450_253.jpg

The meats are not much to speak of, but that area has nice freshly grown
veggies (the foggy temperate coastal weather is good for their agriculture).
That deli's biggest selling point is their moist and warm from the oven,
inch-thick sliced free-form-loaf-bread. It looks similar to

I usually am quite satisfied with eating only half of the large thick
sandwich, and saving the rest for later (or sharing the other half with
someone).

Afterward you could stroll to a coffee/chai houses or cafe' (to also get
your WiFi fix)
http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=Free+Wifi&find_loc=Half+Moon+Bay,+CA

If you time it right, you could visit a local HMB farm
http://www.yelp.com/biz/bobs-vegetable-stand-and-pumpkin-farm-half-moon-bay
and miss the stampede. In October, the area goes pumpkin crazy
http://cdn.onlyinyourstate.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/12-half-moon-bay-pumpkin-festival-700x465.jpg
The second weekend in October, is the destination for more than 20,000
people each year. Shown is a 1200+lb “great pumpkin” (its more of a large
squash than pumpkin but who cares, its huge!).

After you unplug and are on your way back home, if you have a mind to, you
could stop off at HMB's harbor a few miles north on Hwy 1. If you time it
right you can buy fresh caught ocean fish (red snapper, dungeness crabs,
+more) right off the fisherman's boats. Plus there is a fish market there as
well.

Who knows you may enjoy your EV-tourism visit so much you may return, but
have confidence to return via the Hwy 92 climb up over the mountains to the
SF Bay area. Years ago, after a charge at a HMB RV park, I was able to climb
that mountain with my 2ton 132VDC Blazer conversion. I just kept the
speed-steady as I tractored up the mountain.
