Engineering students who want to set new efficiency records for cars can
enter contests like the Shell Eco Marathon or World Solar Challenge.

But there's also a competition for those who prefer vehicles that ride on
rails, rather than travel on roads.

Competitors in the Delsbo Electric contest work toward the goal of building
the most efficient battery-electric rail vehicle possible.

Held on a stretch of tourist-railroad track near the town of Delsbo, Sweden,
it's open to college students.

This year, the winner was a sleek silver railcar called Eximus 1, entered by
a team from Sweden's Dalarna University.

Eximus 1 achieved an efficiency rate of 0.84 watt-hours for every kilometer
traveled by each passenger, which is a record for a rail vehicle, Delsbo
Electric organizers told Gizmag.

Looking a bit like a scaled-down version of classic U.S. streamlined trains
from the 1950s, Eximus 1 weighs just 100 kilograms (220 pounds), and is
powered by a 500-watt (0.67-horsepower) electric motor.

It's made mostly from aluminum to save weight, but with steel wheels like a
typical railcar.

Delsbo Electric contestants have their entries' efficiency measured over a
3.36-kilometer (2.09-mile) stretch of standard Swedish railroad track.

Eximus 1 completed the course in roughly 1 minute, 20 seconds, but only used
its motor for only some of that time.

With steel wheels on steel rails, trains have have relatively little
friction to deal with compared to cars, and Eximus 1 took advantage of this
by coasting for long stretches.

Delsbo Electric entrants must also be able to carry one to six passengers,
with a minimum average weight of 50 kilograms (110 pounds) per person.

Since efficiency is calculated per person, vehicles that carry more people
are not inherently penalized.

For 15 weeks, four students construct a battery-powered rail vehicles to be
operated with minimal energy consumption. The ultimate goal is the
competition "Delsbo Electric" when six people to be transported at a little
over three kilometers long railway track.
The team that uses the least energy wins.

Since February, four students from year 2 in engineering programs in Energy
and Mechanical Engineering has developed, planned and begun constructing a
rail-road vehicles. The ultimate goal is the competition "Delsbo Electric",
which takes place May 28 Then you should compete against teams from other
universities and colleges and secondary schools by driving the vehicle with
six passengers along a railway track. Anyone who uses the least energy
consumption per person and kilometer away.

- So far, the project has exceeded expectations, says Patrik Kenger,
Department of Materials and Technology. This is the first time we Dalarna
University is featured in this contest. The students have developed a very
ambitious design, including manufacture their own wheels.

With the support of teachers and researchers, the four students Michael
Turnip, Jens Bertilsson, Fredrik Gustafsson and Benny Magnusson constructed
his craft from scratch.

- From the beginning we were eight people in the group, explains Mikael
turnip. Since the project will be done completely on free time there were
some who felt compelled to drop out due to lack of time, the studies must go
first.

After careful planning, hull itself clearly and wheels are under
construction.

- We've been thinking about the design for care that we have built the
vehicle, says Mikael. We also looked at the images and data from previous
years to learn how others have done before. The aim is to hit as many as
possible during the competition itself.

- The most important thing about this project is that the students get the
opportunity to work with something fun for a long time with both theoretical
and practical challenges, says Patrik Kenger. They are free to order parts,
work with theoretical calculations and rely on their gut feeling. My own
past experiences with the university's expertise in the form of workshop,
teachers and researchers will lead to a viable project with an absolute
goal. There is no room for any re-exam.

- We have had to learn new things, otherwise than at school continues Mikael
turnip. We think everyone has been very rewarding and something we will have
the advantage of when it is time to look for jobs.

- The industry seeking practical experience. These guys know how materials
feel and how to cut parts. They know about the parts to be screwed or welded
together. Everything they learn is in a whole so they will definitely be
competitive when they enter the labor market, concludes Patrik Kenger.
