Local residents and tourists who own an electric car will have a second
place where to charge their vehicles in the municipality next spring.

The McDonald’s restaurant on Metcalfe Street in Strathroy has been selected
by the province as one of the more than 250 location across Ontario where
the government plans to install close to 500 electric car charging station
by the end of March of next year.

The Ontario government will be investing close to $20 million for the
installation of the stations, which will be part of a larger network of
public charging stations in the province.

The province said the project, which is part of its five-year Climate Change
Action Plan, aims to encourage people to buy electric cars, reduce green gas
emissions, and address range anxiety – the fear electric-car owners
experience when they don’t know if their car has enough charge to reach
their destination.

“Building a more robust network of public chargers across Ontario allows
electric vehicle owners to plan longer trips knowing that charging stations
are as readily available as gas stations,” the government said in a press
release. “With the new network of stations, electric vehicle drivers will be
able to travel confidently from Windsor to Ottawa or from Toronto to North
Bay and within and around major urban centres.”

The new charging station would become the second one in Strathroy after the
municipality installed the town’s first in the parking lot behind the town
hall building back in May, allowing the municipality to join a smaller
network of stations in the county that included stations in Parkhill,
Komoka, and Aisla Craig.

“I think this is a very positive thing for the community. . . For the same
reason that we put ours in,” said Strathroy-Caradoc Mayor Joanne
Vanderheyden. “It’s good for economic development in the municipality,
because people who are coming through town will stop, charge, and while they
are charging they will spend some money here by going to a restaurant or
going downtown.”

According to the government, there are approximately 7,000 electric vehicles
on the roads in Ontario.
