I must admit, I drive differently with an ICE than an EV. In my ICE
cars I'll go 8-10MPH over the speed limit and try to push the limits.
In EVs I'm much more conservative and try to go the speed limit. I
wonder if this is common? My reasoning is that ICE vehicles tend to
have a lot of waste in their efficiency and so you're always kind of
wasting gasoline unless you're driving right in the sweet spot for the
motor. The fuel efficiency between 65 and 80 doesn't seem that
different. So, who cares? You're getting nearly the same millage
anyway. But, in an EV you run much closer to peak efficiency all of
the time so the extra aero drag from 65 to 80 seems to make a big
difference in range. That is, you play the price more directly it
seems. Maybe the overall lack of range plays into this as well. In a
Leaf I can get around 70-75 miles to a charge. In that case if I have
to drive 30 miles out I'm going to be pretty careful to drive
efficiently so that I'm sure to get home. I'm not going to waste
energy driving 85MPH down the expressway! In an ICE vehicle I might be
a little more lax as "gas is cheap and plentiful". Though, driving an
EV most of the time now I'm starting to view gasoline as not quite so
cheap. I'm not used to $40 going into the tank anymore!
