That’s the word from the Californian-based EV maker’s CEO, Elon Musk, who tweeted the confirmation after a electric mini-bus was previously outlined in his second Master Plan for the company. Little is known about the new model or its production timing, but Musk has previously hinted that it will semi-automated or fully-autonomous, suggesting it’s unlikely to see the light of day this decade. Described as a high passenger-density urban transport solution for the future, Musk said the as-yet-unnamed vehicle will accommodate a large but unspecified number of occupants. “The Tesla Minibus will be built on a Model X chassis. People density potential is surprisingly high,” he Tweeted. The idea behind ‘Tesla’s Tarago’ is to create a vehicle with a smaller footprint than a regular bus but not much larger than an SUV, in order to transport multiple passengers. Having just opened its Gigafactory in Nevada – which by 2020 will be the world’s largest factory, bigger than 100 football fields – Tesla will steadily ramp up production of three mainstream vehicles to meet demand. These include the Model S sedan, upcoming Model 3 small car and the Model X SUV, for which Australian pricing has just been announced. And then the Tesla minibus will arrive, based on the Model X architecture. It’s not clear how the new Tesla people mover will be styled, but something along the lines of the Volkswagen Microbus concept from 2001 (pictured) is possible. Powered by lithium-ion batteries, which will also be produced at the company’s gargantuan Gigafactory, the people-mover could become Tesla’s answer to public transport. The founder and CEO of Tesla Musk declared the arrival of all these new models on Twitter in his recent tweet. Other models which include electric cargo van, a mini bus and a pickup will use the chassis of Model X. He had earlier confirmed in the tweet that his new Tesla Minibus will be built on the Model X chassis, according to AutoCar. This car will be based on the specs and looks of Volkswagen Type II. Musk revealed all these details in the answer to a British user’s tweet when he asked for the arrival of a Ford Transit Rival. Musk replied by saying that this kind of concept was possible as well. Tesla is looking for the developments to convert all models into autonomous models. According to Tesla they are planning to improve the quality of driving by introducing more and more auto-driving cars which are based on electronic module. The plan is to regulate the self-driving cars so they can be summoned from anywhere to the place where you want them to be. He also confirmed that a minibus would be built on the Model X SUV platform. Speaking on Twitter, the Tesla founder and CEO responded to a question from a British user, James Ross, about a possible Ford Transit rival. Ross had pointed out that pick-up truck use in Europe is rare compared with in the US. Musk replied that building such a vehicle based on the pick-up chassis “probably made sense”. Previously, he had responded to an article wishing for a Tesla version of a Volkswagen Type II by confirming on Twitter that the Tesla Minibus would be built on the Model X chassis. Last month, Musk revealed his plans for the future of Tesla in an article entitled 'Master Plan, Part Deux', which detailed product plans, autonomous technology development and intentions to enter the public transport sector. It came ten years after Tesla's first master plan, which previewed the subsequent launches of the Tesla Model S, Model X and Model 3, as well as solar power products. As well as a pick-up, the second Master Plan also outlined plans for a compact SUV and two more electric vehicles – “heavy duty trucks and high passenger-density urban transport”, the latter of which is believed to be the minibus. Musk said the vehicle was in the early stages of development, but that it could be revealed as early as next year. As autonomous technology improves, all Tesla vehicles will have the capability to be self-driving, Musk said. He also envisioned a car-sharing platform to more fully utilise passenger-carrying potential in cars that would otherwise be sat outside owners’ homes for the majority of the time when they're not in use. Once self-driving cars are approved by regulators, they could be summoned from anywhere. “Since most cars are only in use by their owner for 5% to 10% of the day, the fundamental economic utility of a true self-driving car is likely to be several times that of a car which is not,” said Musk.
