Rather than heading for the production line, the electric car that would have been faster than a Ferrari, became a stillborn project never to be seen outside of General Motors. The revelation comes from a new book due out next month, called Holden: Our Car. Holden has to date denied such a car exists — even though images have appeared briefly on the internet after being used by accident in a video about General Motors’ global design. Photos show the unnamed Holden electric supercar had “gullwing” doors that opened upwards, and a sleek futuristic look. With two high-powered electric motors, the all-wheel-drive sportscar was capable of to accelerating from 0 to 100kmh in about 2.3 seconds — which would have made it the fastest vehicle in General Motors’ history. It also would have been faster to the speed limit than a Bugatti Veyron, the world’s quickest accelerating road car. There were no plans to build the secret supercar in Australia, but Holden did all the design and engineering development and then put the bold plan to General Motors executives in Detroit. The project progressed as far as negotiating with suppliers, to ensure batteries and other components could be made in mass production. Parts were also priced. Although it was designed and engineered in Australia, the plan was to sell the car globally wearing various General Motors badges, such as Chevrolet, Cadillac, Opel and Holden. Holden insiders called the secret car a modern day version of the Hurricane concept vehicle from 1969 — its paint job was even inspired by the original’s same gold colour. Holden had planned to unveil the new supercar with the restored Hurricane ... A full-size concept car version of the electric supercar was built in 2008 and presented to a General Motors management conference in Florida in 2009. Although Holden designers will continue to work in Australia once the Elizabeth car factory closes in 2017 — but on foreign vehicles — a company spokesman refused to comment on the planned electric supercar or even its very existence. “Sorry, it’s a firm no comment on this one,” said Holden spokesman Sean Poppitt. It’s unclear if General Motors will revive plans for the electric supercar ...
