Every time the cell is at the top of charge, it will expand.
Contrary to the Subject: (which implies lead-acid), this discussion appears to
be about lithium batteries.
Does anyone know if the same holds true for flooded-cell NiCd? I was planning
to use a solid copper bus bar, but if they change size considerably, that is
probably not a good idea. :-(
The Saft manual for my batteries is silent about this issue.
My recollection is that *sealed* nicads swell, since they gas and the
pressure inside builds near the end of a charge cycle.
*Flooded* nicads are much like flooded lead-acids. They still gas, but
the vent releases the pressure so the case doesn't really swell. But,
the flat sides of the case aren't very stiff; so they will still swell
slightly if not constrained. Therefore, flooded nicads (like the BB600
aircraft cells) are still mounted in boxes that constrain the sides so
they won't "grow".
If you don't restrain the sides (for both flooded nicads and
lead-acids), the risk is that when the cells get old, you won't be
*able* to get them out of the battery box!
