People visit the reserve, near Upper Hutt, to connect with nature and recharge, Staglands general manager Sarah Purdy said. "Now they can recharge their car too, so that's got to be a great thing." Nestled in the Akatawara Valley, Staglands is well off the beaten track and not accessible via public transport. The launch is part of the wildlife centre's ongoing efforts around sustainability, Purdy said. The charging station will feature a dedicated 7kW AC connection – enough to give a flat car battery the juice it needs to return to Wellington after a couple of hours with the wildlife. It will be free to use. There will also be two lower-powered sockets that will allow a caravan to plug in, or cope with high demand from electric cars. An official opening will take place at the reserve on September 14 at 2.30pm. The launch coincides with both Conservation Week and International Drive Electric Week, which both run from September 10-18.
