Having been peripheral to software quality testing for vehicle safety - particularly where the threat of lawsuits are high and you have a large wallet - it is amazing how non-trivial this testing is. We all cannot imagine or duplicate in our spare time, the effort that has certainly been done by Tesla.
I don't envy them trying to roll out fixes like they do, this is a major endeavor; to be sure control of acceleration and braking get extreme attention and the code is probably inviolate in these areas. I have personally had to tailor major engine hardware because the OBD systems were done and tested. There was no time in the development process left for software design changes before hard tooling was in process.so whne a tweak was needed, it has to be by changing molds and machinining. It sounded backwards to me at the time, but I totally understand now. I can only speak to the engineering/business/legal environment, not how Tesla software and sensors work. It would be neat to get a look at the architecture and details .
