Yet over in Japan there are restaurant patrons queuing up in chairs that do. Yes, really. The ProPilot may just be one of the most insane pieces of furniture you’ve ever seen. It mostly looks like a folding camp chair. The secret to its futuristic abilities are packed into the two black boxes at its base. Inside those volumes are the wheels, motors, sensors, and other electronics that allow the ProPilot to do its thing. It’s the same kind of gear that goes into a car to give it features like blind spot detection, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warnings… which makes perfect sense since it’s Nissan that built the ProPilot. Why exactly would a company like Nissan build self-driving chairs? The ProPilot might look like little more than a publicity stunt, and it would be a pretty sweet one if that’s all it was. But it actually does solve a real problem for people over in Japan. See, going out for a nice dinner in Tokyo can be a major time commitment. It’s very common for customers to wait in line for hours for a table, and who wants to stand the entire time? Nobody. You could bring your own chair, sure, but then you’re picking it up and scooting it over every time someone ahead of you gets in. Ugh. The ProPilot does away with all that archaic shuffling. The chairs can see when the chair in front of them moves — at which point they engage their electric motors and move on down the line. When you finally vacate the seat to go inside, the chairs return themselves to the end of the line so someone else can sit down. Isn’t technology marvelous? Japanese carmaker Nissan thinks it has the solution. Enter the ProPilot Chair, a fleet of self-driving seats equipped with sensors that allow each chair to detect and follow the one in front of it. The empty chair in pole position automatically glides back to the end of the line. This lazy person's dream might sound like a gimmick, but Nissan spokesperson Nicholas Maxfield says the technology is based on the same system that's currently available in the Serena minivan. "The chairs won't take off on their own and take you to the cinema, but they do represent how the Serena minivan works," he said. The Serena isn't completely autonomous. But its forward-facing camera, which also acts as a sensor, allows it to detect and steer around corners, slow down when another car overtakes and accelerate as a vehicle in front speeds up. At present, this semi-autonomous technology only works on highways. Nissan has big plans to upgrade its autonomous vehicles by 2020 so that they can navigate crowded city centers. The chairs are a gentle way of introducing the technology to the general public, according to Maxfield. They're also proving to be a handy marketing stunt. Six chairs are currently on show at Nissan's public gallery in Yokohama, Japan. They will also be trialled in front of select restaurants in the country from 2017. Any decision to roll them out further would depend on the public's response, Maxfield said. This isn't the first time that Nissan has experimented with intelligent seats. Back in February, the company developed office chairs based on their autonomous parking technology. On a clap of the hands, the chairs tuck themselves away under desks, recalling the scene in Disney animation "Fantasia" when Mickey Mouse orders his household utensils to do his bidding with a flick of his wand.
